TPM says 19 other states have such laws, but fails to list them.
3
@2: Good question, but extrapolating to all Indianans is as stupid as the arguments so delightfully explained in Matt's video.
4
If homophobes could just stop thinking about hot gay action for two seconds, they may find that gays really are not very dangerous at all. But, I am sure that is a lost cause.
6
Yeah, once Christians start becoming the objects of religious-based discrimination, you just KNOW there'll be a great wailing and gnashing of teeth - because, this law isn't supposed to apply to THEM!
7
So... how is the hobby lobby decision going to affect challenges to laws like these?
8
@7:

I wouldn't think all that much. The Hobby Lobby decision handed down by SCOTUS was specifically about a religious objection to portions of the ACA, and (although I'm certainly no expert) I would venture to guess that, while it may be a precedent lawyers could point to if the Indiana law is challenged (which, undoubtedly, it will be), the two aren't directly related, as this bill deals with public accommodation and equal protection under the 14th Amendment.

Bible belt leads the U.S. in gay porn consumption: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/progressive…
10
But of course @9; how else will good, God-fearing Christians know how much of an abomination it is if they don't watch lots and lots - and LOTS of it?
11
I guess I'm looking forward to that "Satanist" church that has been active in Oklahoma and Florida to get busy in Indiana.

I hope some Indy 500 drivers decide not to race this year because of this. Danica Patrick, for one. And any of the others, too.

@9

Not gay porn consumption! They are watchdogs to see what kind of disgusting material is out there for the perverts to view.

Indiana's Gov. Pence is no known relation of mine. I'm proud to say.
14
So are people like Lugar still alive? What's his take?
15
I like Matt's video. However, he talks a little too fast for the idiots that actually *need* to hear his arguments on this point. Speaking of idiots, I am NOT going to YouTube to read the comments on that video. YouTube commenters include some of the dumbest, most ill-informed, reactionary people on the face of the earth, and you ALWAYS see one of them pop up within a few posts. I don't need the challenge to my faith in humanity at the moment.

@8- Remember the Supreme Court said the decision was narrow when they issued it, then immediately expanded it with a ruling that transformed it from a ruling about abortion to a ruling about birth control in general. Hobby Lobby is going to be used as a precedent and it seems to me that right now a majority of the Supreme Court will uphold "religious objections" as carte blanche.

Dick Lugar and former governor Mitch Daniels "could not be reached for comment." Profiles in courage, ladies and gentlemen.

I do feel even with the Hobby Lobby court case, that these "religious freedom" laws will be struck down. It may take some years, but First Amendment is pretty clear about separation of church v. state, and these laws are a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

The Bible sanctions Slavery, (one reason why the South clung on to Slavery, "See, slavery is validated by the Bible" .. One can't turned someone that is legal or against an anti discrimination law.

The thing I don't understand about this whole anti gay wedding cake or gay wedding photography idiocy, why turn down a very lucrative gig?!? Weddings are premium jobs! I joke with my girlfriend that if we get married, we are going to order a birthday cake for a child's birthday party because it is so much cheaper. I don't understand why any wedding industry professional would turn down any wedding given they are very lucrative, wedding parties pay top dollar for a few hours of work..
I guess if I were a wedding industry professional, I would be honored to be asked by a LGBT couple to work for their wedding,

@15 - My YouTube commenters are actually pretty great! They may actually bolster your faith in community. Right now we're critiquing the "true neutral" alignment of various Star Wars characters.

@18. I'm a wedding industry professional, and honored is exactly how I feel. I'm with you on being incredulous at those turning down a fat gig that gives a front row seat to others' joy and happiness.

Midwest brain drain. It's a thing. I get shaming letters from the U of Iowa alumni foundation about it.

Eventually, the stupid will reach a critical mass, and we can replace them all with robot farmers.
22
What year is this? Do these southerners know that it is not the 50's anymore?
23
@22 - No.
24
And the idiot governor today authorized a temporary (30 day) syringe exchange program in one county in response to an HIV outbreak in which at least 79 folks have tested positive since Dec (all due to injection drug use), when normally they have 5 a year. Of course, the residents of South County and those getting infected are predominantly poor, rural, whites. So they get an emergency band-aid.

You really can't fix stupid.

I can't wait to see the headlines when someone uses this law for something other than anti-gay bigotry. It's only a matter of time. We already had a story a few years ago about a city clerk or some such a few years ago who refused to perform an interracial wedding because it was against the Bible. It's only a matter of time before an evangelical baker refuses to make a cake for a Bar Mitvah -- and you know refusing to serve Muslims will be happening the moment it passes. Will Jehovah's Witnesses and the Christian Scientists use this to refuse transfusions or other medical treatment for their children?

Does this not open the door to people refusing to follow any law that they claim violates their "sincerely held religious beliefs"? After all, who but themselves can define that? If a court had to decide whether their beliefs were really sincerely held (or even held by others of the same faith), wouldn't that be a First Amendment violation of the government interfering with religion.

There will be unintended consequences and I can't fucking wait for them to spill out.

Please wait...
