Get your fill of priceless free jazz Thursday night at Vermillion.

While many people lately have been lamenting the state of nightlife and culture in Capitol Hill, Vermillion Art Gallery and Bar remains a stronghold of adventurous performances and DJ nights. For example, Thursday, May 7, the venue's hosting avant-garde author Doug Nufer, experimental trumpeter Greg Kelley, and Subduction Zone, a fiery, strange, and occasionally tenderly melodic improv-jazz trio featuring Wally Shoup (alto sax), Dennis Rea (guitar), and Tom Zgonc (drums). All of these musicians have long histories involving important creations with some phenomenal talents, including Thurston Moore, Anthony Braxton, Chris Corsano, Nels Cline, and Land . About Subduction Zone's set tomorrow night, Rea says, "We're greatly looking forward to stretching out in a set of spontaneous sonic spelunking in which we'll serve up anything from hyperkinetic fusion to noir jazz to eldritch experimentalia." Note: Any group with a track called "Lydian Launch" is worth exploring. For more info about the show, go here and check out two Subduction Zone songs here.
