I bet the name Errol Brown might not be well known to most Slog Outing Americans. However, everyone everywhere will know the mid-'70s SMASH hit, "You Sexy Thing (I Believe In Miracles)." See, that was his, or rather, his band, Hot Chocolate's, sweet dance jam and the song still holds sway on dance floors today. Brown's musical career began in 1969 when his group recorded a reggae version of "Give Peace a Chance" and sent it to John Lennon with a request for approval to release their version as a single. A week later Lennon called Brown and signed the band to the Beatles' Apple label!! Apple then issued the 45" and its filpside, "Love Is Life," went UK Top Ten! Hot Chocolate would eventually crack the US Top Ten in 1974 with "Emma," "You Sexy Thing" in 1975, and the funky "Every 1's a Winner" in 1979. I'd say with their multiple Top Tens, Hot Chocolate weren't exactly also-rans in the US, but even with their US hits, they aren't really a staple of oldies radio. Worldwide tho', they became, and remain, MASSIVE. In the UK they scored at least one hit per year from 1970 till 1984—a hit per year for FIFTEEN consecutive years!!! In 1985, Brown quit the band to spend time with his family, but came back in the '90s as a solo performer. Brown died from liver cancer at his home in the Bahamas; he was 71.
