When announcing his official run for the highest office in the land, Jeb! Bush said something truly amazing, truly wonderful. The exact words out of his Floridian mouth: "There's not a reason in the world we can’t grow at 4 percent a year.” He then promised that 4 percent growth “will be [his] goal as president.” This would be a neat trick. The US has not seen that kind of growth rate in more than 40 years. And at that time, the '50s and '60s, the marginal tax rate on the rich was at 70 percent. And when the US economy was really cooking, the rate was at 90 percent. It's currently at a lame 35 percent.

The kind of growth Jeb! is promising is predicated on the kind of taxes his family and their ilk spent the latter half of the 20th century abolishing. If we take him at his word (and why shouldn't we?) that he has a plan to achieve and sustain 4 percent annual economic growth, then it follows Jeb Bush has promised to double the tax burden of America's wealthiest citizens (his class) as soon as he's elected. That's almost enough to earn him my vote right there.
