Now Open

• As Tobias reported, winemaker Charles Smith just opened an impressive—and massive—urban winery called, appropriately, Charles Smith Wines Jet City. The 32,000-square-foot space is located in a former Dr. Pepper bottling plant in Georgetown and boasts views of Mount Rainier, Boeing Field, as well as the winemaking process for labels such as K Vintners, Charles Smith Wines, and Wines of Substance. There are two tasting rooms open to the public, and Smith promises that on occasion there will be rock shows and dinners, too.

• From chef Zach Chambers (who has cooked at Ethan Stowell’s Tavolata, Anchovies & Olives, and Bar Cotto) comes Atta Boy, which serves sandwiches such as pork belly porchetta, fried chicken, and fried green tomatoes from inside Capitol Hill’s Bar Sue. The sandwiches are available 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. nightly, and during weekend brunch from noon to 3 p.m.

• Last Friday morning, PCC Natural Markets opened a new story in Columbia City, just hours after closing down its Seward Park location (I happened to stop in the Seward Park store, which will become a Third Place Books later this year, last Thursday afternoon and found the shelves nearly bare, and briefly wondered if the store had been emptied in some sort of earthquake-preparedness panic). The expansive new store—located on Edmunds Street and Rainier Avenue South, just a few blocks from the Columbia City light rail station—has full-service meat and seafood departments; delis stocked with prepared food, pizzas, and soups; and a classroom for cooking classes.

Restaurants Planning to Open in August
While restaurant opening dates are notoriously "flexible," August should see the opening of several anticipated places such Marcus Lalario's Fat's Fried Chicken and Waffles, Makini Howell's vegan creamery and sweet shop Sugar Plum, and Toby Matasar's entirely gluten-free Niche Cafe. Over the past week, news of even more August openings have been reported.

Full Tilt Ice Cream will open a Capitol Hill location on 15th Avenue East on August 15, according to Seattle Met. Owner Justin Cline says the shop will not be scooping ice cream, though, instead focusing on their expanding line of ice cream bars and fruit paletas. CHS has more details here.

• And Eater Seattle reports that, over in Mount Baker, Gary Snyder (Geraldine's Counter) and Dang Nguyen will open Heyday, a gourmet burger restaurant, in late August. The menu, which will include non-traditional burgers made from bison, lamb, and a vegetarian version with beets and beans, is being crafted by chef Melissa Nyffeler (of the dearly departed Dinette).
