Wow. This interactive graphic put together by the Guardian is harrowing. Six hundred and sixty-nine people have been killed by police in the United States this year so far, 14 of them in Washington State. You can drill down by race/ethnicity, gender, state, age, armed/unarmed status, and cause of death. Interestingly, many more white people than black people have been killed, most have died from gunshots, and most are between the ages of 25 and 34. Twenty-eight of 669 have died while in police custody.

We hear about officer-involved shootings all the time, but seeing them in one place reveals just how out of control use of force is in this country. Also, while you can click on an individual's name to see the status of the case, you can't drill down to see overall how many of the officers involved have been penalized in any way. It would add another layer of understanding to know how many are still on the force.

Still, this is a very sobering database.
