On the early Shabazz Palaces track "Gunbeat Falls," MC/producer Palaceer Lazaro raps, "The beat will always save us." But on the Seattle avant-hiphop group's new cut for Adult Swim's Singles series, "The Mystery of Lonnie the Døn," the beats sometimes sound muted, like they're coming from a distant cellar—and at other times they come off like a police officer's truncheon cracking human bones. This odd percussive approach helps to make "The Mystery of Lonnie the Døn" perhaps Shabazz Palaces' strangest production yet—which, if you've been following them since their 2009 beginning, is saying a lot. The eerie, woebegone main melody—seemingly generated by a Theremin inhabited by a soulful demon—could've come from a Demdike Stare record or Mica Levi's Under the Skin soundtrack, while lyrics touching on "new wave lynching" and "champagne dripping" contribute to the song's none-more-ominous aura. Shabazz Palaces continue to nudge hiphop into uncomfortable new spaces.
