I have to remedy a major omission from my article about Seattle’s best beertails: the winter beertail. Research for the article took place over the course of our lovely, long summer, leading to a list heavily weighted toward the crisp and refreshing. By the time the article came out, it was verifiably sweater weather—I was sitting in the Hideout, taking refuge from a chilly October evening, and the thought of drinking even the world’s tastiest shandy wasn’t exactly appealing. Luckily, I discovered this dark beauty.

Made with Fernet, lemon juice, and simple syrup, and topped with porter from Anchor Steam Brewing, the Fernet ‘Bout Me is all the earthy, musky, full-bodied things you'd want in a winter drink. The lemon provides the necessary acid to balance out all the hearty, syrupy action, and the result is a smooth, fortifying elixir well worth the $8 price tag. The Hideout, with its blacked-out windows, is also the perfect bar in which to forget about the oppressive grey weather that’s taking hold. My only issue with this drink: I’m so damn tired of Fernet cocktails named using Fernet puns. Can we just Fernet about that shit already?
