He begins, "Once again we've seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians..."

France is our oldest ally, he points out, and we will stand with them in the fight against extremism. "Those who think they can terrorize France, or the values they stand for, are wrong. The American people draw strength from the French people's commitment to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

He mentioned "the hateful vision of those who perpetrated the crimes this evening."

He added that "We don't yet know all the details of what has happened," and that U.S. officials have been in touch with French officials to offer support and condolences. "The situation is still unfolding. I have chosen not to call President Hollande at this time because my expectation is that he is very busy at the moment."
