It's not clear what prompted this, but here's the latest outburst from the Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG) Facebook page:

Pigs—we've all heard that one before, of course. But when did it come into use? One theory is that the term originated at the 1968 Democratic convention, when the Yippies held a protest and nominated a 145-pound pig named Pigasus for president. As the cops chased and eventually arrested the pig, the protesters started saying the police are the "real pigs."

But flatfoot and peckerwood? Those were new to me. Turns out flatfoot originated with officers who carried out their patrols by foot on long walks (thanks, Google!), thereby ruining their arches. Peckerwood comes from the South—essentially the equivalent of "redneck." It was once used as a slur to describe poor Southern whites but some white supremacist gangs have adopted the name.

While we're on the subject of street slang, here's a full list of acronyms and phrases sent to Seattle police officer Sandra Delafluente one year ago to prepare her for an undercover assignment.
