There is an easy solution for this: take away the off switch. Create an Office of Public Accountability that has a paid administrative staff that turn the cameras on when cops go on duty, and turns them off when they finish duty.
2
@1 unfortunately police in other cities are tampering with them. Sometimes its just the audio, sometimes its audio and video.
3
Do today's police really think they can scream "STOP RESISTING!" the same way kids grab each other's arms and yell "Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!" and call it good?
4
It would seem so...

We put thousands of [mostly black] Americans to death, or behind bars for life, for much, much, much less, and those people were never obligated to advance the goals of society in the first place; it's only right we hold police accountable to a higher standard than your average citizen.

Which is why I say, these 4, and hundreds of other cops, ought to be hanging from the end of a rope for all to see, they're traitors to their own country.
6
@1 here's an ever better option: take away their guns.
7
@3 - Yes.

Police performances like the one Ansel describes, and I've read elsewhere, makes me think that body-cams are, in part, turning cops into Reality Show actors... :>(
8
It needs to be a felony to turn off a body cam
9
Cops who lie to hide malfeasance, their own or other cops', need to be put on a national No Badge list at the bare minimum. And, yes, they should be prosecuted more often too.

If this beating hadn't been recorded, then they would have not only gotten away with this beating, but gotten away with Dustin Heathman's beating as well. Two of the five officers shown in this video are also involved in Dustin's case, including Cody Hoppel, the officer who pleaded guilty to beating up both men. Notice at the end of the video you can hear them yelling, "Stop resisting! stop resisting!" Well, they said the same thing to Dustin too, when he was handcuffed, unarmed, fully compliant, and posing no threat to anyone. And if you think this beating looks bad, remember- Dustin was beaten up before Price was, and the sheriff himself tried to help cover it up.

@1 - and what happens when they have to use the bathroom?
12
Body cameras are not the answer. THe answers are

1- Stop elected bigoted right wing district attornies.

2- Holding police personally responsible for civil lawsuits (NY is a good example of where Seattle is headed, Billions over decades due the blatant police misconduct and corruption.,..any other job that shit gets you fired).

3- Make the OPA 100% civilian elected and appointed. No former/current law enfocement employees, as the current Seattle OPA is 3/5ths as.

4- Taken hiring decisions away from internal Brass and place it up to non-cop civil servant municipal employees.

5- Ban Cop unions. They have proven, nation wide, that they are an impediment to holding bad (and outright fucking evil) cops responsible for their deeds. Hey Officer Holzclaw...how did you get laid for so many YEARS? Hey Former police chief of Tacoma...how did you get away with that spousal abuse for so long? Hmmmmm

It's true. Cameras don't do much when they're turned off. Researchers say this can be addressed by turning them on.

@11, I'm picturing movement or voice-activated cameras?...A few seconds standing or sitting quietly, such as in the bathroom, or reading a newspaper at lunch, and the camera turns off. Human interaction or driving/walking/running and the camera turns on.

@15, I would imagine the 4th would override any right of the public to see videos of your private dwelling space. In other words, you would have to sign a release before your videos could be up for public inspection (Supreme Court something something "Wilson" I forget the details. Also http://mentalfloss.com/article/19326/5-t…). You'd still want the cameras rolling though, for your protection.

@14

Hey genius, Eric Holder (FEDERAL DA, not State Attorney of Missouri) did not try Officer wilson. The feds left it to the state, and the state elected to have pro-cop/historically anti black prosecutor McCulloch defend him.

Are right winger so unarares to the most basic understanding of how government works as you dont get the difference between STATE prosecutors and FEDERAL?

The media was sympathetic to WIlson? LOLZ. What media were you watching? Do you only Watch RT New, Al Jazeera and nonmainstream American *aka anti-black* news?

The truth is if you held cops individually responsible for their bigotry and crimes, this shit would end in days.

The last job left in America where you can be a violent bigot, and (literally) aggress upon people whos skin color you dont like to the point of murdering their women and children is law enforcement. When they fuck up, taxpayers soak up the tab.

Please wait...
