Seattle doesn't like Newton because he beats the 'hawks (main reason) and is a poor sport about it (secondary reason); not because he's black, uses food metaphors, or is from the south. Wussell Wilson is black and from the south, too.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the "hot sauce in my bag" is actually referring to the (largely Black, if my experience is any indication) custom of dumping hot sauce in your bag of chips, not one's shopping habits.
I'm familiar with this particular snack as being Frank's Red Hot in a 25c bag of nacho flavored Doritos, but I would expect regional variations to exist. Still: "hot sauce in my bag" just makes me think of spicy doritos. Also, if you've never tried this, it's delicious.

@3: that's not what I was trying to say. i'm trying to say seattle doesn't like newton because of sour grapes - that's the reason for the petulant whiner petition, which I was blissfully unaware of until alerted to it here. if Cam was our QB we'd love him (well, maybe not after that performance).

I agree there's a racialized double standard - white offensive lineman are the most unsportsmanlike players, but they do their gouging and punching at the bottom of piles, not for the cameras.

Granted, I am old. But I found the halftime show generally to be a mess, and the whole Beyonce thing to be tired. Doesn't she have another costume designer? At least Madonna reinvents herself from time to time.

Maybe her new song is better in the studio version, but I just thought it was a mess.

@stirwise I'm from the south. "I got hot sauce in my bag" means exactly that. It's not out of the norm to know people (or be the person) who LITERALLY always has a bottle of hot sauce on their person. Women do keep a bottle of hot sauce in their purse. One reason: there are so many different types of hot sauce that people have a favorite and they might go to a restaurant that has a different type of hot sauce than their preferred brand. Reason #2: GOD FORBID THIS RESTAURANT NOT HAVE HOT SAUCE!!! I think she was trying to establish just how "suthun" she is.

Haha Beyonce didn't stomp on anything, she displayed her very successful appropriated imagery of revolutionary ideology. It's all very tame and sanitized for the NFL.
