good god, that cartoon. lol.
2
If your friend's pregnancy has caused her to become that seriously ill, then you're the jackass for dragging your sick friend to a concert where you know (legal or not) people are going to be toking up.
3
Now I wanna get high. And I'm at work. Great, thanks a lot.
4
@2 I must have missed the part where the author said he forced his friend to come to the concert with him. Perhaps she wanted to come, because pregnant women don't want to spend 9 months just lying in bed waiting for the baby to pop out?
5
People have been smoking weed at concerts, well, forever.

So you think everyone else should accommodate you and your wife where ever you go because she's pregnant? Maybe you and she should have made the correct decision and not gone to an event where, had you used your brain, you would have expected weed to be in the air?

You're a self-important and arrogant moron. You're probably a NIMBY who thinks you and you lovly wife's farts smell like imported Italian truffles.
6
Actually, since you shouldn't force someone to breathe your second-hand tobacco smoke I don't see why it is okay to force someone to breathe your second-hand marijuanna smoke. I like to get high, too - but not every time I go to a concert.
7
I am a daily consumer of cannabis to help mitigate chronic back pain. I agree that 'smoking in public ordinances' should apply to smoking ANYTHING; there are ways to medicate (regardless whether your goal is to "get high" or not) without generating smoke.

However, going to a concert expecting it to be pot-smoke (or idiot) free is as ridiculous as going to a bar and expecting it to be alcohol (or idiot) free.

Your pregnant friend is an adult and will need to better predict the likelihood of all kinds of potentially harmful environments for her child, born or yet-to-be-born, and remember that the rest of us really don't give a shit....

until you start whining.

Cheers!

good lord, i can only imagine the amount of people reading this in the print only version and how they wish they could tell this person to suck on a dirty sock.
I will take up this honorary torch and comment for those people thusly;

SUCK ON A DIRTY SOCK! people have been smoking pot at shows for a very very very long time. it has NOTHING to do with any new pot laws.
9
(cont)
well, except that with the new pot laws you will likely be getting HIGH AS FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!
10
Smoking at shows not legal before, not legal now.
11
Smoking at shows not legal before, not legal now.
Going to shows and expecting them to be pot-free brain-dead before, and braindead now.
12
Meh... so long as doods don't mind being vomited on so be it. ::shrugs::
13
Wow, she gonna be a great mom! Going to concerts when she should be getting her rest, planning good dietary meals for healthy fetus development and staying away form social scenes that encourage pot smoking and probably liquor drinking. Maybe some personal responsibility is in order and not expecting society to revolve around your universe would be a slightly better option.
14
Wow, she gonna be a great mom! Going to concerts when she should be getting her...
Yes, that's right, SeattleBCC, she should be at home and perhaps barefoot on the couch?

Seriously, it's not a matter of *not* going out at all, it's a matter of understanding that there will be weed at concerts (more for some than others), and understanding that the entire world does not bend for you simply because you are with child.

But I guess at least she's not snorting piles of COCAINE while swilling MALT LIQUOR like half the pregnant ladies in the Central District...
15
@5
You are a moron. The writer never said this person was their wife... read more carefully. Oh, wait... are you too high on your own arrogance to take the time? I've been an herbalist since I was 14 (I'm now 33) and I use it for both pleasure and pain management, but I harbor no illusions that other people MUST adapt to my choice to smoke... it's my thing, and some don't dig it. So, I use manners and smoke respectfully. Get high before the concert if you must, ya whiners!
16
@15, thanks for being a civil person! Also, I love everyone's line of logic here: "You should expect people to act kind of jerky and just avoid people being jerks instead of politely asking them not to be jerks!" Yes, making the decision for others that they are now going to be inhaling smoke is kind of a jerky thing to do. It's not the worst, but I don't think concert goers should just assume everyone around them wants to secondhand smoke pot.

I know that people often smoke pot at concerts, but I don't think it's *so* unreasonable to make a request to get high before the show. Maybe unrealistic, but certainly not worth the vitriolic "WTF DO YOU EXPECT, IDIOT?!" attitude the Sloggers want to throw at Anon.

The internet makes people sooo reactionary.
17
Good grief, what a bunch of nanny whiners.
18
If the one with child is feeling ill she should consume some canabis. Smoke inhalation is always harmful of course. I agree that it is rather inconsiderate to smoke anything in a public enclosure but one should no expect others to consider anyone other than themselves and plan accordingly. That said I enjoy getting high at concerts/festivals but I do try to be considerate of others. Oil drops and tinksures are brilliant for getting baked in public.
But to all those who expect a woman to sit on her ass and deprive herself of live music while pregnant, for you I have a far less eloquent response...go fuck your self.
19
@Ziff, seriously, your comment (#5) was ridiculous. Your interpretation was really far off the mark. Not his/her wife, not as stupid as you wanted to make him/her sound, not worth your frothing at the mouth.

Also, there is really nothing that even suggests that Anon is a male at all. BOOM your sexism reveals itself once again!
20
@14- FTW. She should have been inhaling deeply if she was nauseated- pot helps with that.
21
This I anon raises an important point about the need for a new etiquette on smoking pot in public places.

Pot is much worse than tobacco be because it's psychoactive, and people should have the right to not inhale that stuff.

Some people have mental illnesses that are triggered by pot inhalation.
Personally, I enjoy the occasional accidental high, but I totally respect people's right not to get high without their consent.
22
People like you should just stay home. Shut up, you you whiner.
23
I have NEVER EVER gotten high because I was in a room with pot smokers. BUT...I realize my previous comment is too inflammatory. Maybe pot smokers should eat some baked goods? Can we compromise on that? I just imagine the idiot in front of me spilling beer on me b/c they're drunk. So you know what? I go to a concert expecting some drunk person to spill something near or on me.
24
Technically, not legal to smoke in public. Otherwise, yeah, gotta agree, people have been toking it up at concerts for eons, and it's pretty much to be expected. Has nothing to do with it being legal. But to expect everyone else to stop doing what they've always done because of you or your friend's circumstance is stupid. I've known women like this---the entire world needs to stop and look out for them because they're pregnant. And I'd have to agree with some of the others that if she's having nausea issues, being out in public with whatever smells it may bring is maybe not the best idea. Ginger root is good for nausea, though, but pregnant women need to be careful. Pot makes me throw up, so, I don't use it, but, that's just me.
25
Yes, it is unrealistic to expect people to get high at home before the show. Don;t be such a twat and prepare for the ganja. If you can;t hang, then don't go. In otherwords stop being a douche....and I don;t even smoke herb.
26
Oh, and if the mom-to-bes response to something she doesn't like is to vomit on the offender, she needs to have her kid taken away ASAP. We don't need any more of THAT attitude in the world, thanks.
27
@15: You're calling the pot smokers in this situation the whiners, but the only whiners we have evidence of are anon and their spoiled pregnant friend.
28
@4 Brandon J. VERY GOOD POINT!!! Pregnancy does not mean we need to wrap ourselves in bubble wrap and avoid the world.
29
Glad to know it's fine to smoke at concerts. I'll bring my cigar next time.
30
The point of this I, Anon was not that the pot smokers should be catering to the pregnant friend. The point of this is that pot smokers should have some common courtesy and not blow their pot smoke into every one else's faces. If you must smoke at a concert, I doubt anyone is going to begrudge you a couple of quick hits off of a joint; it's entirely possible to do that without putting up a cloud of smoke. Or you could get up and move off to the side, or hell, why not just bring some brownies? Fun for you, and doesn't bother anyone! I was at a Jason Mraz concert over the summer, and there was a pair of pot smokers in front of us who were blowing smoke over everyone to every side of them, including a girl sitting next to me who couldn't have been more than twelve, not to mention my husband, who is seriously allergic to smoke. They actually chased off the couple that was sitting next to them. They negatively impacted the enjoyment of at least half a dozen people during the concert, and that's just shitty. People who love music shouldn't have to forgo concerts just to avoid asshole potheads (and I put sloppy drunks in the same category). Just because it happens doesn't make it ok, it doesn't make the people doing it any less assholes, and it doesn't mean that we can't do better.
I voted for pot legalization. I'm all for it. I have tried it and it's not MY thing, but I think other adults have the right to enjoy it if it's THEIR thing. All I ask in return is some common courtesy.
31
What's with the ultra-lame "I Anonymous" columns lately? Where have the snarky, backstabbing, highly personal stories gone? This boo-hoo potsmoking-makes-my-girlfriend-nauseous crap sounds like the kind of nanny state horseshit you expect from the Seattle Times. Compare this milquetoast bullshit to the typical "I Anonymous" column in the (Portland) Mercury and the lameness really stands out. Come on Stranger editors; get your heads outta your ass.
32
this column makes me hate seattle. as if we needed any more bickering from and at one another.
33
@21: While all that is true, you're extremely unlikely to inhale enough second-hand pot smoke to have any mental effects. I'm very sensitive to THC and I've never gotten a second-hand high, even with three people doing bong hits in the same apartment as me.

BTW, nicotine is psychoactive, too -- it affects neurotransmitters in the brain, and can be either a powerful stimulant or a depressant, depending on dosage. We just don't usually think of it that way because it's never been illegal.
34
Well it's all been said, I've been to concerts where people act like that the event is for their upper middle class asses alone, they complain if someone smuggles in booze, complain if someone gets high, complains if someone dances.

What ever happened to the good old days when it was your duty to try and smuggle in the biggest bong possible not to mention enough weed to get everyone high and take enough LSD that you don't know if your in another persons dream get naked and smear glow sticks all over your body?

the author should consider renting a DVD of the performer and simply sit on their couch or join the Mars Hill Church and go there for their entertainment needs.
35
Shit, people at concerts smoke weed. But at the same time, pregnant ladies are allowed to continue living their lives and go enjoy music if they fucking want to. What solution could there be!!!?

If bros in front of your are smoking a little, okay. The pregnant lady is going to be fine. If they're smoking joint after joint, why not ask them to cool it? You just ask nicely, and if they're cool they'll do it, and if not you can talk really loud and say I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU GUYS AREN'T COOL ENOUGH TO SMOKE YOUR WEED AWAY FROM THIS WOMAN WHO'S WITH CHILD!!

I think maybe if you dropped the anonymous bit and just spoke up, most people would be cool about it, and if they weren't you'd get the satisfaction of shaming them.
36
Apparently anon has never been to a concert before because pot has always been smoked at 'em. Shit, first time i saw somebody light up a joint was at the first big concert i ever went to some 18 years ago. Am I saying it's right? nope. Just the way of the fucking world.
37
At the concerts I've been to, what I most wished was that people would sit down so I could see the show.
38
Yeah, way back 35 years ago during a Van Halen concert, no way you could have asked or expected someone to put it out. Everyone was just too estactic about having the freedom to light up some herb in public without much fear or hassle of getting arrested - everyone was pretty well of the same mind. 2013 is a different time, with tobbaco smoke long outlawed and now with the herb quickly moving towards acceptability and legal status, so a fair question is, has the plant reached the stage of mainstream acceptability to be subject to the same rules that apply to public tobacco use?
39
I'm commenting in this thread cold, so forgive me if this is a repeat statement.

It ought to be obvious to anyone that not all of us want to inhale the byproducts of whatever you're smoking. I don't appreciate second hand pot smoke any more than I do second hand tobacco smoke (ok, so I do prefer it slightly, but it's still gross).

Enjoy your new found freedom, which I voted for enthusiastically. But please be considerate. If it were up to me, I'd bring powerful speakers and drown out your shitty music, but I don't out of politeness.
40
I don't see why smoke of any kind has to be in a public place where other people are forced to breath it whether they want to or not. What's wrong with pot brownies?
41
Hey Diagoras, I don't see why I need to see or smell YOU in a public space.... Oh, but maybe I should make small accomodations when I live in a SOCIETY and not up some dirt road in the back country?
42
smoker be a champ and smoke outside. anon don't be a cunt. now let's all have a great day shall we. what a bag of fucks.
43
Have you ever been to a concert? Ever?!

Potheads have been doing that for countless decades. Welcome to the world of live music and rude people.
44
A bit late to the comment party but 100% agree, anon.

I am pro-pot (all drug decriminalization, actually), but absolutely hate the smell of weed. Yuck.

In my apt. building someone smokes weed and it stinks up the entire floor. If you want to get high in public, or live in a apartment building, and can't afford some sort of high tech filtering German nebulizer bong thingy, BUY HASH AND MAKE BROWNIES!!!

In a civil society your right to freedom should end where my right to be free from your shit begins. For all I could care you could shoot up in public (provided you dispose of the sharps), that would be less obnoxious than smoking (incl cigars, cigarettes, & weed). Airborne shit can't be avoided.

Same goes with cologne and perfume, even scented fabric softener. Some of us have severe allergies. Be kind, air is a shared resource in urban environments.
45
@41, don't be daft. Obviously I'm not just talking about the smell but the choice to ingest or not ingest a drug and other pollutants that might come with it. It's a personal choice, which means you should not force it on others. Learn how to bake.

Please wait...
