I agree with all of you! Except for you, "Anonymous, Olympia." Whether or not the 'zine says "For Adults Only" doesn't change the fact that it's generally targeting an older audience, and in any case definitely NOT 6th graders who, by the way, are as grammatically adept as any 2nd grader.
I think its a fantastic and creative use of the text - bringing it to the attention of sixth graders and prompting them to think about drugs and the negative effects it can have on your life.
Well done to the bright, sensible children.
Encouraging to write their opinions to the editor is a great way of making education more real-world.
Children at that age are program to think that way anyway. I remember I made a bet with my dad when I was 10 that I would NEVER smoke a cigarette until I was 30 (I bet him $50, alot of money to my young mind).
However, the editor and Ellen Forney shouldn't over react about the backlash. These are some young children reacting strongly about a situation in their world - isn't that great? Don't we want to see passion and enthusiasm in our younger generations? If the students were passive on the subject, that to me would be the epitome of pro-establishment attitudes.
