The whole beginning of women shaving is pretty interesting - it happened during WWII, when nylon was restricted for public use to help the war effort. Gilette seized upon this as an opportunity to sell more razors. They advertised that women could shave their legs and draw pantyhose lines with an eyeliner pencil to recreate the same effect. Stylish even during wartime!
