LaToya Ruby Frazier: Born by a River: LaToya Ruby Frazier's family goes back three generations in the town where Andrew Carnegie built his first steel mill, which is still pumping. Heavy industry, crack, political neglect, white flight, and now gentrification are destroying and erasing the African American families that call Braddock, Pennsylvania, home. As a teenager, Frazier began photographing her family as a stand-in for the story of her town, including herself, her mother, and her grandmother at the center of her work. This show combines those intimate, modest prints with large-scale photographs shot from a helicopter. Frazier is the winner of SAM's 2013 Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Prize.
