Public Service Broadcasting

Barboza (map) Capitol Hill
Sat., March 28, 7 p.m. 2015 21+

As a longtime PBS viewer, I was a little irked by this band's name until I discovered they were from the UK. I can't imagine that Public Service Broadcasting causes as much confusion in Britain as it would here; and the name makes a fair amount of sense since the duo (multi-instrumentalist J. Willgoose, Esq. and drummer Wrigglesworth) construct their soundscapes from educational films and other bits of flotsam and jetsam--exactly how some people might describe PBS. On their sophomore album, The Race for Space, politicians, newscasters, and astronauts ramble about space exploration atop Kraftwerk-inspired emanations. The result: DJ Steinski meets Wax Tailor with a little Todd Terje on the side. Performing with guitar and drums, these bespectacled gents put on a surprisingly dynamic show. KATHY FENNESSY
