On their 2016 album, House in the Tall Grass, Tokyo quintet Kikagaku Moyo cast their folk-based songs in a lysergic glow, much like Bay Area outfits Six Organs of Admittance and Heron Oblivion. Just as their tagline promises, they make “feeling good music.” By minimizing the vocals and cranking up the guitars, their new EP, Stone Garden, showcases the band’s more free-form side. Sympathetic tourmates Sugar Candy Mountain arrive in the wake of last year’s deceptively titled 666, their third full-length, an iridescent take on sunshine pop. Where Kikagaku Moyo lean toward the Syd Barrett–era Floyd end of the psychedelic spectrum, Will Halsey and Ash Reiter’s Oakland collective has more in common with interstellar-girl-group acts like Os Mutantes and Melody’s Echo Chamber.
