Singer-songwriter David Bazan—who formed Pedro the Lion in 1995 and led a rotating cast of players until he dropped the moniker in favor of using his own damn name starting in 2006—crafts that deliberate, brooding brand of indie-emo rock commonly called “slowcore.” It isn’t necessarily the most apt subgenre label, since plenty of his material has a faster pace, even if Bazan’s low-toned vocals always maintain the same morose quality, where everything comes out sounding weighted down by its own depression. Fresh full-length Care incorporates synth and electro textures in a way that doesn’t feel forced, highlighted by the dark, slinky, alt-funky “Disappearing Ink.” LEILANI POLK
