Merchandise with B Boys

What does post-punk from Tampa, Florida, sound like? If it’s from the band Merchandise (awful name, by the way), then it’s a morosely melodic, mid-tempo grind not unlike that purveyed by the Strokes and Interpol. On albums like Angels in the Station, Merchandise’s songs possess rougher fidelities and more eccentric accents, like the oddly squawking synth on “What Did I Say Last Night?” and the My Bloody Valentine–esque guitar squall on “Roser Park.” On their recent 4AD album After the End, though, Merchandise have accrued the sort of production gloss, anthemic proclivities, and casually aching, stentorian vocals that radio programmers love; I’m catching Echo and the Bunnymen/“Lips Like Sugar” vibes. One can foresee them garnering a main-stage appearance at next year’s Capitol Hill Block Party and similar high positions at other festivals countrywide. DAVE SEGAL
