Back in the '90s, I toured Childhaven in Bellevue while serivng as a United Way campaign coordinator for U.S. West Cellular. The people at Childhaven were, and are, wonderful people who greatly deserve your support. The sadness about all this is that Childhaven is actually necessary, and that it relies on donations.
As is so often the case in life, the best plan is to give until it feels good for everyone involved.
Thank you, Stranger -- yet another reason to love you! I have been involved with DESC for 10 years (5 as a volunteer and 5 as an employee) and your money couldn't go to a better organization (yeah, I'm a little biased...). Outwardly we take care of the survival of the body -- shelter, housing, food, clothing, etc. What happens underneath and between all of that is the real work -- letting people who have been largely thrown away by society know that they have value and worth.
Buy these things, people! You get a Christmas gift and a donation?? It's altruistic and intelligent. You'll go to heaven for sure. At the very least, you'll get laid. I don't know either of the places personally, but they sound like services we can't afford to lose. Literally.
