The Komen Foundation’s Partisan Attack on Planned Parenthood, the Women Who Are Upset, the Response from the Local Chapter, and What You Can Do Caves, But What Now?

The Komen foundation, like Mr Romney, does not worry about the "very poor."

Good piece!

I'd add that we should obey Karen Handel's campaign slogan when she ran for Georgia governor: "Bring It On!"

And send Handel an e-mail telling her what we think of Komen now:

Khandel@komenadvocacy.org

Before Handel was hired as Komen's vp of public policy, she was on record as opposing PP at all costs.

Here's a quote from her July 2010 campaign literature:

"First, let me be clear, since I am pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood. During my time as Chairman of Fulton County, there were federal and state pass-through grants that were awarded to Planned Parenthood for breast and cervical cancer screening, as well as a Healthy Babies Initiative. Since grants like these are from the state I’ll eliminate them as your next Governor."

How could Komen -- a foundation whose goal is the betterment of women's health -- possibly hire a woman who pledges to reduce health care not just for women but for babies?

Incredible! Let her know what you think. Bring It On!

No more donations to Komen.
More donations to Planned Parenthood!

Where will Goldy get breast examinations now?
6
Komen also cut funding for stem cell research.

Well, i hope you cover if there is going to be a protest or post details about it. i never protest anything and i will be there like flies on sh*t if there is one organized.

By the way, the Balloon Juice blogger you call "ABL 2.0" is more properly referred to as "ABL" (the 2.0 is a mocking reference to some intra-blog drama). She has her own blog as well.

(She has a real name, of course. It isn't actually a huge secret - she announced it when she got some paid work blogging at a site that uses authors' real names - but she doesn't often use it at either Balloon Juice or her own blog.)
11
Great article gang!

But, I'm actually hoping that this turns into more than a PR disaster for Komen (and hopefully increased awareness of PP). I hope it results in a shitstorm of media inquiry into where it is all those $$ to Komen actually go.

Even without the PP scandal, Komen is probably not an organization that people should be giving $$ to if they care about efficient use of philanthropic funds.
12
What I did:

-- left a message at Komen expressing my...disapproval.
-- donated fifty bucks to PP
-- emailed American Airlines that I booked a flight with US Airways because of AA's support of Komen (incredible scandal timing re that)
-- emailed New Balance and Walgreens that I won't spend money at companies which shunt part of their proceeds to charities hijacked by neo-Confederate authoritians

@BetarayBilly2:

Free breast exams still available. Fret not.

Re: your #4 suggestion: talk to people: yes, have the conversation. Be prepared for people to talk back, however, as in most people's minds, Planned Parenthood = abortion. Even though it's only 3% of what they do; even though neither government money nor the money formerly donated by the Susan G Komen foundation was used for abortions. 3% of what they do; 100% of the public perception problem. I brought it up on FB:

http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?st…

For those who don't wanna go through the tl:dr of that, I was told I was evil, that I rub dead fetuses on my face, that I have worse things than cancer to worry about & that I've murdered innocent souls.

Have the conversation. It should be had. For many people, PP is their primary source of care. Just know it's a can of worms.
15
Great article. It's not just women who are pissed off. Not too many men out there who can say they weren't born of a woman.

I too am working my way through that list of donors and writing to them, and I think I'm going to print up a handful of flyers for the Gala detailing shortly and succinctly what's wrong with Komen. With references. I want to make the pretty people in their tuxedos and ball gowns sweat a little on their way into the Olympic. I've always been a little suspicious of people who only give to charity if there's a fancy party with expensive food and entertainment in exchange.
16
Thank you for this.
I've emailed and tweeted the Komen Foundation numerous times now regarding my disgust at their political bullshit and backpedaling, and sent a donation to PP in their honor.

Planned Parenthood was the only place I could get ANY medical care in Utah when I had no insurance and very little money. When I showed up to a yearly exam with a horrible cough, the nurse practitioner also listened to my lungs and told me I had pneumonia and needed antibiotics before I ended up in the hospital. I told her I had no insurance, and they wrote me a prescription for antibiotics as well as my BC pills. Not long after that, one of my professors died from an untreated case of pneumonia. I guess I could say I probably owe PP my life.

In the spring of 2010, the Republicans planted explosive charges throughout the body of ACORN and detonated them before any of us could say "boo".

This time we're ready; now we're responding forcefully to this stab-in-the-back assassination attempt on a progressive institution.
18
thanks for this - just made my donation to planned parenthood in handel's name.
19
Hey y'all, Seattle Clinic Defense is awesome and the details of this protest is still in the works but they are putting something together!

@aw, yes, the old fetus rubbing on the face comments......if I had a nickle for every time one of my wacko relatives said to me......well, I wouldn't need to go to Planned Parenthood. Way to hang in there.
20
oops sorry, I typed @14 but somehow, well, I guess I didn't!
21
Check out the trailer for this documentary coming out this month challenging the Komen model. Folks are definitely going to be taking its message seriously after this anti-PP policy move. All the old previously ignored critiques now look fresh and relevant. I can't see how Komen can survive.

22
Great article. I am in 100% on this one. The "Gala" may just be great timing...

This not a "Women's issue". Women and girls are not a special interest group. We are more than 50% of the population. This attack on PP should be a huge concern for men as well.

ERA! ERA! And QUIT Legislating my body.

Gravy Train - 41 staffers there make > $100k.
Bunch of biggies making 3x - 5x that!

OINK!

Excellent article!

Find a pink tie. Put on a nice shirt, and tie the tie. Then, find a pair of scissors and chop the thing in half. Attend protest. Voila!
27
Breaking news: Komen has announced they've dropped plans to cut off Planned Parenthood from their grants program.

You heard it here first.
28
Made a donation to PP with acknowledgement sent to Karen Handel.

Felt pretty darn good!
29
@22: You NAILED it for the WIN!!!

@27: Thanks for the update. That is good news, but I'm still glad I never gave any money to Komen. Go, Planned Parenthood!!!

Hey--can we also snip off the "pink' junk hanging between the legs of all these ultra-WRONG-wing, violently anti-abortionist, women-hating whackos? THAT idea makes me feel pretty darn good!
30
Komen receives funding from such companies as Coca-Cola, General Mills, 3M and Georgia Pacific (a subsidiary of the Koch Industries), which uses BPA chemicals in their products-- which are linked to breast cancer.
31
This, in case you didn't know, is 2012. Why is support for Planned Parenthood even controversial? For heaven's fucking sake.

Penn State is also under investigation and just got some Komen money. hmmm.
36
All Komen said was that they would not yank the funding already with PP. And that PP could apply for funding in the next grant cycle. What this means: PP will never get another cent from Komen. They think people are stupid enough to think the issue went away and that everyone will continue to participate in the wretched pink walks, buy pink shit thinking they are supporting a cause.

I have bigger hopes that now people understand the game.
37
Your article is very long. It discusses a subject in which I am interested, and yet I stopped reading after about one paragraph for two reasons:

1. "Until then, no one with any sense should give Komen one red cent." Yes, stifling an NPO's funding is going to encourage them to continue to give away funds rather than keep them in house for research, their primary objective.

2. "US Senator Parry Murray". Come on. You are a professional. Supposedly.

38
@37, you really think Komen is an NPO, with research as their primary objective? Why?
39
@31 Of course support of Planned Parenthood is controversial; Americans are closely divided on the abortion issue.
40
So the Right Wing got moles into one women's health advocacy group (Komen) to attack another women's advocacy group - Planned Parenthood.

Even if the overt attack on PP didn't work (for now), the attack on Komen did. In addition, as "The Stranger's" local investigations indicate, this attack has terrorized all other women's health groups. None of them want to speak publically against what is happening.

In addition to watching Komen's actions, I'd say we need to watch who runs other groups that now support PP or are involved in all women's health care.
41
Sounds like a whole bunch of whining to me. "Gimme the money or else..." Hey, did you know that induced abortion is a main cause of breast cancer? Komen fights breast cancer, a no brainer.

And I had to laugh out at loud when Patty Murray said that "We will remain vigilant that politics does not come into their decisions." Coming from a died-in-the-wool politician borders on the absurd. The money grubbing abortionists are using plenty of politics to extract their money by coercion. That money belongs to the Komen foundation, and was given freely as a gift, who are you to say how they now decide to spend it?!
42
How about putting some money towards the re-establishment of Acorn? The mission of this right-wing conspiracy is to swoop in anywhere that has a lot of money and attach strings to it, as well as take away and destroy as much polital power from the vast majority to benefit the rich and powerful few.
43
41, do you simply bleat the stupid shit people tell you?
44
Three points.

1) PP doesn't actually provide breast cancer screening. The make referrals to those who do. Komen would be well within their mission to drop the non-provider of services from their grant roster.

2) The "only 3% of PP services are abortions" is based on the fraction of procedures. Which means an abortion counts as one procedure and taking the patients temperature counts as another. By dollars, from their annual statements, abortions account for between 10-30% of their billion-dollar business.

3) Money is fungible. Federal dollars or private dollars all fund the base organization. That organization provides 20% of the abortions in the country. While I don't think abortion should be outlawed, it is not a pleasant thing. Every dollar not spent on administrative overhead can be directed to wherever necessary.

Bonus point - Komen wasn't going to take the PP grant money and set fire to it. That money would have gone to other organizations to fight breast cancer. PP supporters have behaved shamefully.
45
Republicans are trying their best to put their view of the world into a political agenda. Republicans want to get rich even if it means that they destroy America in the process. The Republicans will outlaw abortions if they win control of the government in the next election. Read my web page at www.mybetteramericaplan.com to see how the Republicans are bad for America and what it will take to make our country better.
46
@43 Oh, yeah Republicans bad Democrats good, bleat away. @42, bringing Acorn back is bringing voter fraud and criminal behavior back. Unless you think it's Ok to advise people how to skirt the law and conspiring to promote child prostution. Video doesn't lie. Those Acorners have no right to come back, they blew it big time.

The fact is, the money is Komen's to spend as they wish.
47
Interesting take on it all. Never thought of ACORNed as a verb. But then, getting Borked is a verb, so why not. Something I didn't notice in your article is the pushback from the not quite so far right right. People like me who are anti-abortion as in they would never in any way do anything to support an abortion, but at the same time aren't in "activist" mode either. I had no idea that Komen was giving to Planned Parenthood until this broo ha ha got started. Now, Komen if off my list. No, I wasn't a big donor; but I am a "runner" (OK, jogger) who drops $30 to register for one of those "race for the cure" events. I would also make announcements to my college classes (I'm a professor) about upcoming events, thinking I was encouraging students to be active in worthy causes. Well, no more announcements and no more $30 donations from me. I'll also spread the word to my socially conservative friends, some of whom will also stop dropping that $30 to register for a race. I have a feeling there are a lot more people like me who never had a clue about the Komen-Planned Parenthood (I hate the euphemism for an abortion clinic) connection.

49
Yeah Komen can spend as they wish, and get called a-holes for it and reverse it. Duh.

The plus in all of this is DONATIONS, I work at PP and good grief we have had a LOT of peole come in and give what they can. Just had an adorable older man come in and give a hundred dollar check, apolgizing for not being able to more due to being on social security. He assured me we were in his will. It was the day of the reversal and I wanted to make sure he knew that and he said oh yes I know, I just hate those bastards and their politics. I woulda kissed him were I not working behind three inches of bulletproof glass. Oh yeah and he asked if I could make sure it was allocated to the abortion part of our budget. Sweet!

So please just donate what you can, if you come in and do it, we have some nice swag for ten dollar donations, the cool pink shirts, the out of style pink bracelets (people love em, not sure why) And of course always free condoms, keith herring (sp?) artsy ones now!

I just love that the whole thing turned a major negative into a plus. We work there for not much more than minimum wage, you have to want to do it for reasons other than money, and you feel good at the end of the day. Well sometimes not so good, there are some rough times but at least you can feel like you tried to help, big goddamn difference from my corporate jobs.
50
Komen Foundation doesn't actually spend money for "research" as they say -- Hells bells, cancer is ENVIRONMENTALLY caused, we all know that, and Komen can't SAY that, let alone "research" it, as it would offend their Corporate Sponsors and Rich Friends! Air, water and soil pollution, contaminents in our food, in our cosmetics, in our furniture, in our homes and gardens.....
I always had my suspicions of the Komen "machine". Didn't even know about the pink handguns and pink ammo!, tho.

Coincidentally there are out right now some devastating documentaries about the whole pinkness thing. {Also read Barbara Ehrenreich.} As someone said, I don't see the Komen foundation surviving all this, which is shining a needful spotlight on what is behind all the glitter and hype, the smoke-and-mirrors to impress and mislead the Public.
51
So they got rid of their most public policy maker. So what? There's still the rest of the board that voted her in, knowing damn well that she doesn't give a shit about women's rights. They need to all go too.
52
My daughter manages a Tuesday Morning (discount store) -- the pink crap (other stores' closeouts and overstocks) is already rolling in. Like the Penn State merchandise has been for the past few months!

However, as that rare bird, a 2nd-Amendment Liberal, I must say the pink gun looks pretty cool. I heard it's not a very good gun though.
53
@51 suddenlyorcas: I agree, but let's not stop there. Asswipes like Cliff Stearns, the Republican douchebag from Florida launching the federal investigation on Planned Parenthood who, well quoted by Nicole Brodeur in The Seattle Times, will "never miss a period or feel a breast lump", and all power-crazed women-hating shitwipes like him should go, too.
Preferably one-way to a hot desert island somewhere infested with fatally poisonous arachnids, scorpions, and rats.

WhoooooEEE! Speaking of poisonous, Runny Santorum's flushing down a lot of sewage in Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri! Don't those idiots know how to vote??
55
let's see the same coverage on the obozo in chief caving on contraceptive coverage today..Oh, and have you ever noticed how 99 percent of the women in the stranger personals are liberal?? wonder why that is.. couldntt be that they are hags could it??
56
it's funny that so many liberal women get so upset about planned parenthood.. have you seen how fucking ugly most of the women in the stranger personals are?? and what a surprise, 99 percent are liberals..

let's see the same coverage for the obozo in chief caving to the catholics today..
57
And?

PP's is how many times larger than Komen?

The paltrey $20 Mil. barely covers the PP's executive staffs wages and benefits.

Just like when AT&T cut PP funding, way back when, PP comes out of the gates with the hate. Mostly because they are afraid others will use this as an excuse to bail.

Hopefuul, they WILL crush Komen. Just because they are so annoying.

Pink Freaking Beer Bottles? And other pink rebranding ad nauseum, this has to stop.

More humans die each and every year from prostate cancer. How many cents have any of you tossed their way?

Please wait...
