Kenneth Branagh has fucked up everything he has touched in his whole life. All of his Shakespeare work is consistently bad, every role he has been cast (or cast himself) in, even his marriage to one of the era's most stunning beauties, Emma Thompson. He blew that and ruined her in the process. Maybe that mustache is just his way of letting all of his inner ugliness out.
