"still the hardest for Hollywood to get right." Maybe wait until we see the long-overdue, probably-never-happening Wonder Woman movie before this pronouncement.

Am I the only one that liked "Superman Returns"? Why all the hate?

It wasn't fun (http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/superm…) and Lois Lane (who became an established journalist, had an affair, then raised a kid for five years) was played by an actress barely old enough to have a BA.

@2, yes. You are the only person to like Superman returns.

I watched and wanted to like it. But... it was boring. I barely remember a thing about it now. I think its biggest mistake was trying to play too much homage to Christopher Reeve, which made it seem like a hollow imitation of the real thing.

I haven't seen this yet, obvs, but at least it looks like it is a complete reinterpretation, dumping any pretense of the Reeve series, and with a new star that has enough charisma and presence to make the character his own.

@1: Wonder Woman is tough because she gets reinvented every few years. But that almost improves the odds for a Wonder Woman movie, I think, because they can pick and choose the best parts from a half-dozen or so major reinventions of the character. The right screenwriter could find a good balance for her. Superman has been through a lot of changes, but his core has basically always been the same: Rocketed from a doomed planet; truth, justice, and the American way; reporter for the Daily Planet; believes in fair play.

@2: I wanted to like Returns and couldn't do it. The idea of Superman abandoning Earth for years didn't feel true to the character, and the idea of him being a stalker and a deadbeat dad was totally wrong. Singer kept the wrong parts of the Donner movies (the jokey Luthor who was obsessed with real estate most especially) and didn't bring much else to the story except the aforementioned two wrong ideas. The two leads were pretty bad, too.

@4: It's a total reinterpretation. I didn't even catch a single callback to the Reeve films, and I think that's a good thing.

Boycotting due to complete boycott of DC. DC still gave money to Orson Scott Card and never apologized.

Fuck them.

My entire group really enjoyed this movie. I had some issues with some glaring plot holes I couldn't help but notice while watching, but it was still an incredibly fun movie.

I've also had a fun time discussing it with a friend, regarding the Superman-is-Jesus allegory at work in this movie. Still, strident anti-theist that I am, I enjoyed it and would watch it again, and not just because Antje Traue (playing Zod's liutenant, Faora-Ul) is the woman of my dreams.

Plot holes. Lots of acting with the space between the eyebrows. And oh my yes, a buttload of fighting.

I kept thinking -- the definition of insanity is to repeat the same behavior and expect a different result. No tactic changes during the long long looooooong fight scenes. Zero creativity. Zero thought except biff bam boom. Stupid.

I was SO GLAD when it ended. I was bored out of mind and peeved at the logical inconsistencies.

Please wait...
