Hrm... as a sensory scientist I have to say that this statement:

Here is a really simple test for you... get a flavored lifesaver candy or really any flavored hard candy.
Hold/pinch your nose, place the candy in your mouth and evaluate the taste... what flavor is it?
Now let go of your nose. What is the flavor now?
