While pink La Vielle Ferme in a box has become fairly common, and is delicious enough for everyday use, sometimes I want something a little better. My local wine shop (City Cellars) has Commanderie de la Bargereone (Coteaux D'Aix-en-Provence) for a very reasonable $40 a box, which -- as always -- is about half the price per bottle in glass from the very same store -- $18 or $20, I think (a box contains as much wine as four of these).
I wish there was more variety, though. I've read about Vrac and From The Tank (Les Vignerons d'Estézargues) in the box -- both from Provence, both around $30 a box, but I don't know who carries them in the area.
Also, Mateus gets a bad rap -- it's not meant to be snooty gourmet-dinner wine, just a pleasant, slightly petillant (bubbly), low-alcohol (11%) summer wine, essentially a pink vinho verde. It's fuckin' good stuff on a hot day.
