Happy Feet 2 brings some 3-D pizzazz to the cartoon penguin musical genre, but accomplishes little else. Although a story built around a bunch of starving penguins trapped in a capacious snow valley creates opportunities for father-son bonding and an adequate number of “challenges” to be met, the “dancing conquers all” ethos feels overly naive, even for a kid’s movie. The film’s most inventive component is casting Brad Pitt and Matt Damon as bottom-of-the-food-chain crustaceans Will and Bill the Krill, who don’t end up doing much, but have enough existential angst to appeal to the less-engaged members of the audience (people over 8).
