In my years working with the public, I have never heard of an atheist taking offense at being told "Merry Christmas", but I learned to dread December for the Christians who would rip a strip off me and my staff if we failed to say "Merry Christmas". This year I notice that NOBODY out there is saying it. In no store have I been wished ANYTHING -- not happy holidays, not season's greetings, not merry Christmas. Nobody wants to offend the Christians by saying something that will set them off, and nobody wants to be thought a jerk who is about to go off on somebody for not getting exactly the response he wants. Thanks to Fox News, it's a much less merry December this year.

This senior is grateful for every stroke I can get. Keep 'em coming, young people! For every curmudgeon who complains, there are a thousand of us who enjoy a kind or cheerful exchange in the course of the day.

When I was a little girl, I heard a terrifying sermon with this as the text. The moral of the whole story, it turned out, was that girls should not put out, because if a guy fucks you without being married to you, he will then hate you. The fact that this was rape was apparently irrelevant; it was still Tamar's fault that he did it.
Years later, of course, after my father raped me, it was understood that he would hate my guts (and I his), and that the whole thing was somehow my fault. "For the Bible tells me so."
