"What's your motive here, Charles?"

Page hits.
That's why he's quoting Marx's comment about Capitalism and trying to link it to the NRA (and indirectly, Americans owning guns).

"When the media sensationalizes every single gun-related incident, it's clear that the media is paid to convince the public that the 2nd Amendment needs to go away."

Not exactly.
More like "if it bleeds, it leads".
The more sensational the story, the bigger the audience which means more advertising money.

"Where are the sensationalized news stories about the 300,000 Americans who die a slow, painful, financially-debilitating death from cancer every year in the US?"

Occasionally you will see stories like that.
But someone dying over 6 months is not as sensational as a shooting.
And cancer usually hits later in life so there's not much "his life was cut short" that can written.
And most "journalists" want to do as little work as possible to get a "story" out.

"The ironic thing is, one of the reasons why swimming pools are chlorinated today is that it proved to be effective against polio."

That may be the first instance of "apples and oranges" to also include tomatoes.
Or would it be more correct to just call it a tangent?

"Many more people die each year from gunshots in the US than died from polio during its peak years."

And when you're on a tangent, stay on the tangent.
Because all deaths are the same except when they involve guns and then they're completely different.

"So even if it weren't stupid straw man argument, the swimming analogy might not work out so well for the pro-gun camp."

And Goldy does not know what a "straw man" is.

Which means .... !!!

You posted 18 sentences of personal attacks (ad hominem) and you did not address my points.

Dan is operating on a double standard.
If a child in Iraq is involved in a shooting by our military that we sent to invade their country then it is acceptable because 9/11 and Islamo-Fascists.
If a child in America is involved in a shooting then it is unacceptable because think of the children.

To Dan, a child in Iraq is worth less than a child in America.

In Dan's own words:
"Still, I don't regret my support for the war, nor do I regret the war itself."

Nice work, Brendan. But you left off the best example.
The McCarthy witch hunts.

It's not just whether you did at one time attend a protest or meeting or whatever.
Even if you've never attended anything like that you can be associated with someone who has through your phone records.
And then ALL of your actions can be questioned.

"And they took their suspicions to a judge and obtained court orders — not to monitor any particular suspect, but to instead cull the dialed numbers from the thousands and thousands of calls made to and from certain city pay phones..."

Yeah. "...certain city pay phones..."
Not including the phone in the deli next to one of those pay phones.
Not including all the phones in the apartment building next to a different pay phone.
And so on.
But that is different now.
Now it is ALL the phones.
And there are no "suspicions".

"Following 9/11, groups of even smart people who should've known better believed that more disaster and destruction a la 9/11 was likely on it's way if we didn't get a hold of this menace that was groups of religion-mad guys using Islam - those are the Islamo-Fascists - as a weapon to remake the world according to the Taliban or Sharia law, or whateverthefuck."

Again, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.
Again, "Islamo-Fascists" is a meaningless term used to demonize the Iraqi citizens living in Iraq so that certain people could feel better about advocating their deaths.
And the Taliban was not in Iraq. It was in Afghanistan.
And there is no way that America will replace our laws with Sharia law.

Dan chose to refer to those Iraqi citizens living in Iraq as "Islamo-Fascists".
Dan chose to publicly advocate for invading their country and killing them.

"Nobody is saying we were right to go into Iraq and I remain baffled and disappointed that a guy as smart as Dan Savage ever thought otherwise."

Then maybe you should read what he wrote back then.
Because that is exactly what he was saying. And if you disagreed then you were "stupid".
And he was using the terminology that you keep repeating now (Islamo-Fascist and 9/11).

What was it that Dan had written?

"War may be bad for children and other living things, but there are times when peace is worse for children and other living things, and this is one of those times."

Yeah, you might want to think about that for a bit.
So I'm not falling for the double standard.
If a child in Iraq is involved in a shooting by our military then it is acceptable because 9/11 and Islamo-Fascists.
If a child in America is involved in a shooting then it is unacceptable because think of the children.

And no. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and the "Islamo-Fascists" that you keep bringing up were just Iraqi citizens living in Iraq.

Want to watch a video of one of our helicopters shooting some kids in a car? It's okay because, as you said before, 9/11 and Islamo-Fascists.
"Well it’s their fault for bringing their kids into a battle."

"Velvet knows Iraq and 9/11 had nothing to do with one another. She said as much."

And she implied that they did in her post #45. Let me quote part of that for you.

"Frankly it makes sense to have called Islamic terrorists who perpetrated 9/11 based on what they interpreted and were taught was written in their holy book 'Islamo-Facists'."

The "Islamo-Fascists" under discussion were the ones that Dan called "Islamo-Fascists" when Dan publicly advocated for invading Iraq. And Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

Don't forget her post #39. Let me quote part of that for you.

"Remember a thing known as 9/11?"
"The people who (apparently) did that were Islamic, hence the term "Islamo Fascist" which got thrown around at lot at the time, and which, in that particular situation, fit the bill."

Again, the "Islamo-Fascists" that Dan had identified where the "Islamo-Fascists" otherwise known as Iraqi citizens living in Iraq. And Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

And again, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.
