Universal Background Checks Bill as Dead as a Person Shot With a Gun Purchased Without a Background Check.
@1: You have the right to bear arms, nobody is trying to take away that right. The mental health argument is pointless since a perfectly sane person can right now buy an AR-15 and tons of ammunition, lose their shit mentally speaking, and still have that arsenal without any way of anyone knowing. In this scenario it's the guns that are the problem, not the crazy person. You can't stop someone from going insane (generally speaking), you can stop someone from buying a murder weapon. Guns are the problem when it comes to mass shootings, not the mental health system.
Also, relax. Nothing is going to happen, except possibly a ban on video games.

Will We Be on Mars in Twenty Years?.
Nope. No way no how. As much as I would like for it to be so, we simply don't have the money to go to Mars. I mean, we have the money for it, physically, but we already have that cash earmarked on wars, corporate welfare, drone technology, ruining the internet, ect.
It would be awesome if we sent humans to Mars, but the only way that is happening is if there is a compelling national security reason to do it. Science is not enough. So if we can drum up some martian microbes, with potential for germ warfare, then maybe. But I'm not holding my breath.
Also, fuck I am a pessimistic ass.

You Need Guns to Overthrow a Government?.
This is a big reason why the NRA is obsolete. By advocating that the only way to defend the country from tyranny is to create and sell more and more lead slinging machines, they reveal themselves to be the cavemen that they are. The right to bear arms must include hacking tools, malicious software, botnets, TOR exit routers, an anonymous internet...all the things I will need to coordinate with my fellow citizens and publish my findings re: tyranny.
But you see that shit is never going to happen. Because most of that stuff is free. Nerds aren't mouth-breathing idiots either, so getting them to step in line is a lot like herding cats.
Guns are the easiest answer to a complicated problem. If the only answer you will accept is the easiest one, you are a child.

Gun Nut Claims Hammers Are More Deadly Than Guns.
@6:
"I know several people who's only rifle is an AR15, the data shows that assault rifle owners are not the people who are commuting murders in this country."
Assuming you meant "committing", in which case you are correct. Assault Rifle owners are not killing large groups of children in minutes, their unhinged adult sons are.
I would now like to formally apologize to the Slog commenters for feeding the troll.. Please carry on.

And the Best Jobs for Women Are....
@6 If you aren't asking for more money, it isn't a "raise", it's just punishing yourself. Getting a better title without getting better money weakens your position overall. It's worse than useless.
That said, my advice has always been to never ask for a raise unless you already have an offer from another organization. It's harsh, but if you ask for a raise you deserve and are turned down, you need to resign within the month. The best raise you will ever get is when you take a new job, and if your current employer won't pay up, someone else will.

Some Logic Lessons for Gun Nuts.
@3 - I've gotten this claim quite a bit lately. That somehow if I am pro-gun control it's only because I am scared of the aggressive aesthetics of modern assault rifles and I am too stupid to understand that they are not machine guns. It's the same old "Democrats are wimps and Republicans are REAL MEN" baloney that's been going on since Carter. It's not going to work.
As for 30 round magazines, or even 20 round Glocks, if you need that many bullets to get the job done - you need to spend more time at the range because you're a shitty shooter.

At Least 26 Dead, Including 18 Children, Reported at Connecticut Elementary School Shooting.
The guns have won, and they won a long time ago. We live in a country of the NRAs (and Cascadian Bacons) making. A world in which there is no effective gun control, and never can be, and where people get shot up by nutjobs on a regular basis.
Obviously we don't need more gun control laws. As CB points out, there are already plenty of laws on the book that aren't working. What we need is FEWER GUNS in the US. This means we stop selling guns to everyone and begin a systematic confiscation of handguns and semi-automatic rifles. A thing which WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
Thanks to the hard work of "gun rights activists" shit like this is going to become more and more common.

Seattle Times Puts Our Nation's Gun Culture in "Perspective".
@33: My mom would disagree with you. She owns an AR-15 specifically because she needs it to protect her home, and her Glenn Beck gold coins, from Obama. She also owns an undisclosed number of handguns. She is, without a doubt, the most mal-informed and heavily armed woman in her retirement community.
