A rare pleasure to read a thread full of uniformly on-the-mark comments! Yes, the video is awesome! Yes, he replaced doomed-to-die-in-space melancholy with sorry-to-have-to-leave-space melancholy. Yes, even astronauts need to have funtime! Yes, @11 for the excellent astronaut-love allusion! Yes for best astro-stache ever! And, alas, yes to the fact that very little by way of actual science has ever come out of the space station, and that, dollar-for-dollar, the unmanned program produces like a thousand times more interesting science.

We had our last(?) snow only a week ago, so not a lot going on here, yet. Except rhubarb, and even that's not really big enough to harvest yet. Most years I put up vast quantities of strawberry rhubarb jam which we give out as little "thank yous" e.g to the kids' school teachers. But I may have to supplement with store bought stalks this spring, given that school ends in only two weeks.

@37: Oops. Rereading your comment @4, I see it now. Yeah, it's weird: the institution in the US that presumably knows guns best, the military, understands that the vision of a secure, universally packing society is (as @21 put it) just NRA fapping.

@4: On military bases, there are these people called "MPs", the military equivalent of civilian police, and there are sometimes regular civilian police, too, around on military bases. Both MPs and civilian police are armed. After that, pretty much no one else is, except if they are doing some sort of training exercise. What they found is, if everyone is packing all the time, there are a lot of accidental and non-accidental gun deaths. If there is an actual shooting war going on nearby, then it's worth that aditional risk involved to have everyone armed. Otherwise, not. They forgot to share these statistical findings with the NRA, however.
