seandr, you are so full of shit. Smoking MAY kill off a segment of the population before they reach old age, but the people it doesn't kill end up sicker in their old age (COPD) than non-smokers, and those chronic illnesses caused by things like smoking are what raise costs. The volume of illness, in this case, is not the issue, but the CHRONIC SEVERITY of it.
Your kind of nonsense is why people like Gladwell should be examined closely and critically.

@28 I agree with your copper IUD recommendation. But a woman who may be relying on EC needs it to work and if EC was prescribed/marketed to ALL women as effective when it was known to not be effective for a significant number of them, that is unacceptable. The fault doesn't lie with women whose biology keeps them from being ideal recipients of EC, but with the people who prescribed/sold EC to those women.

OMG. When I was in London last month those Barclay's Bikes were a goddamn life saver when my bus was diverted, the tube line closed for engineering, and I couldn't afford a cab. No helmet required though... that ordinance could make things harder in Seattle.
But only $85 for a year? A good bike and helmet is a big investment for a new habit, but $85 a year I could try biking around and see how I like it before becoming a "cyclist."
I love this idea - I wish I lived in a place that tried these things.

I think part of what is happening is akin to a delayed adolescence; not in the sense of "party!" but in the sense of forming a sense of self not tied to a group - not family, not school, not friends, but individual. I think previous generations let go of group identities at younger ages... I'm struck by how many 20-something people I meet who are just now becoming disillusioned with group identities that my peers and I let go of as teens.
I don't know. Thoughts.
