A silly excuse for an article, but I look forward to blaming everything on:"a debilitating legacy of Nordic caution."

Yes, it's possible for a man to sit next to a woman on a bus without creeping her out, assaulting her, or inciting her anger or that of her relations. 1) make the briefest possible eye contact, nod, or eyebrow flash as you sit. 2) You may make one (1) impersonal remark eg; weather, traffic, or the transport itself. "Sure is raining" or "glad I caught this one." 3) After that sit quietly, don't look at her, and don't talk further unless she answers your comment. 4) If you exchange a few words and she stops talking, you stop talking. 5) No personal remarks whatsoever about her, what she's wearing, no questions about her life or where she's going. 6) Do not tell her the story of your life, your day, your boss, or your girlfriend. 7) nod minimally when you or she gets up to leave. That's it. Should work for everyone regardless of religion, age, attitude.
Nov 20, 2015 MsBoyer commented on The Holidays Are the Busiest Time of Year at Food Banks, So Consider Donating Right Now.
Great idea to donate to food bank if you're able. It's also true that food bank donations are highest around the holidays, but bottom out in summer when many families experience even more food insecurity. A regular monthly donation helps food banks maintain services through the ups & downs of seasonal giving. Consider a regular contribution that provides buck or two a day to keep your neighbors in groceries, if you're in a position to help.

Christopher; great article! You've woven a lot in to tell this important story. good to see this in the Stranger.
Mar 7, 2015 MsBoyer commented on Why You Should Give a Fuck About the Port of Seattle's Decision to Help Destroy the Planet.
Right, 42; Part of putting big oil out of business is refusing to accept the legitimacy of their endeavors. Drilling in the Arctic is suicidally stupid, morally indefensible, economically absurd; the Port should have nothing to do with such a project. If we want a semi-functional planetary ecosystem - that's as much as we can hope for at this point -- we need to leave the oil (coal too) in the ground. Our elected leaders need to hear about this every day until they get it.
Dec 4, 2014 MsBoyer commented on Are Protestors Really Ruining Seattle's Christmas?.
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do no violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages. Luke 3:14.

So; is protesting police violence ruining the celebration of the birth of the Man of Woe? Or is it just slowing down retail sales?
Dec 2, 2014 MsBoyer commented on We Asked 12 People at a Ferguson Protest: What Do You Want?.
So, do we really want cops wearing super-google-glasses? So that when they look at you, they instantly have access to your name, arrest record, facebook feed, and medical records? And your conversation with them is immediately uploaded to the cloud to share with NSA, FBI, and creditors? This is the best solution we can think of to the problem of police violence?

Aug 18, 2014 MsBoyer commented on Police Misconduct Is Out of Control.
The police exist primarily to enforce the state monopoly on violence, usually by acting out the violence directly. It's much worse for people of color, working class or poor people, young people, people with disabilities including addiction, any target group member. But the police maintain their right to beat the shit out of anyone they want, for any reason, at any time. This is not a new phenomenon. After 10,000 years of civilization, is anyone surprised about this?
Aug 7, 2014 MsBoyer commented on Neil deGrasse Tyson Talks GMOs.
The point of GMOs is to: 1) provide a revenue stream through the annual sale of sees and 2) provide another revenue stream through the sale of pesticides & herbicides that the GMO organism is engineered to tolerate. Regardless of the inherent safety of the organism of Roundup Ready Corn, the proliferation of Roundup Ready crops has increased the amount of Roundup sprayed on the North American land mass by orders of magnitude. Results include the devastation of monarch butterflies and other pollinators, devastation of frogs and other amphibians, and destruction of the biome of rivers, the Gulf of Mexico, etc. This is just one example of the unintended consequences of use of GMO crops. Most the rhetoric on this, both pro and con, focuses on whether "GMOs are safe". Even if they are -- and the evidence seems incomplete to me -- the use of laboratory-made, Monsanto-owned GMO crops is doing profound harm to the world. The move to Label GMO crops is largely an attempt to get a handle on the environmental destruction caused by Monsanto. Anyone have a better idea? I'd like to see the company disbanded and their works taken down to bare earth & concrete.
