Apr 12 apres_moi commented on Savage Love Letter of the Day: How Soon Should He Bring Up His DUIs?.
I wouldn't even bring it up unless you guys are hanging out regularly. I've gone on horrible dates with guys in their late 30s who have more baggage than me (my baggage is around dealing with my mom who goes into rants whenever I try to offer forward-thinking advice, but I've digressed) and bring it up within the first 30 min of meeting for a drink.

My advice for gay men in their 30s and older who are meeting off "Le Apps" for the first time:

1. Don't bring up your shitty ex that you were with prior to recently starting to meet guys. No one wants to play therapist for the night, unless it's a role play of course.

2. Don't arrange to meet the guy while you're out with your friends. They didn't plan to meet you and your friends, get vetted by them, and to probably not flow with your friends b/c he was under the impression that he was just meeting you. Now if you say "hey i'm with some friends right now. you're more than welcomed to join us." and he accepts then sure it'll work. I've actually made platonic friends that way. and I have horror stories about meeting guys when they were with their friends and they didn't tell me.

3. Don't meet at a gay bar for drinks if it's not a hook-up. You'd be surprised how distracted you get when other attractive guys are passing by you or even being fucking disrespectful and tacky by flirting with you or your date.

4. Don't be an aggressive asshole when someone says "hey I think I'm going to call the night short and head home".

@8 I'm sorry not buying your argument. United fucked up big time and the flight attendants, boarding agents, and pilots (b/c they have the final say) need to be either fired or forced to take a month off w/o pay with loss of benefits during that time.

I talked to a friend who works for a major airlines as a flight attendant. They should've asked for volunteers before boarding and refused to board passengers until they had four volunteers. Also, I'm surprised that there are no laws that forbid them from doing what was done, unless there was criminal intent happening before departure. In addition to this, I would think it's a huge legal liability to remove a trained medical professional from the flight in case where there's a medical emergency with either a flight crew (aka pilot having a heart attack) or passenger.

@14 An epitaph of his very short professional life.

@5 Zimmermann shouldn't have had the gun in the first place. If he needed a weapon, they should've just given him a taser. And yes. I, as an African American "liberal" originally from South Carolina, viewed his acquittal as a miscarriage of justice, along with the mistrial of the Walter Scott murder that let Michael Slager walk out a free man. I'm sorry but viewing the death of a black person as just "well one less black person to worry about" justifies the need of the Black Lives Matter movement and the evaluation and reform of police conduct.

Adding to my rant, two years ago I was visiting a friend in Rio, who is black and part of the upper class there. We were talking about his then trip to NYC and he said the following: "The fact that you had a wealthy black tennis star attacked by the police for no reason and with no warning for him to stop, tells me that the US doesn't value black lives. I'm more fearful of the police in the US than I am in Brazil"

As an African American originally from the South, I'm worried out of my ass.

1. He definitely won't go after police departments for civil rights violations.

2. He'll make "Stop and Frisk" a national law or a national mandate for PDs across the country regardless if states or local municipalities ban it.

3. He'll use federal laws to go after the state-legal cannabis shops in WA, CA, OR, AK, MA, and NV and the medicinal cannabis states.

4. Combine #3 with his racism and he'll probably target POC who either produce, sell, or use state-legal cannabis, while being light with others.

5. I can see him turning a blinds eye to voter-intimidation of POC in purple states to benefit the Republicans

If this video and evidence is true, why wasn't it released during the campaign. The last debate would've been very very interesting.

As soon as I saw this headline, I came here to view the comments :) But to be honest, the video needs to be verified by the FBI before I believe it. If it's true, oh shit...
Jan 6 apres_moi commented on I Want to Take My Womb Out of Retirement and Give Birth to a Black Daughter So That She Can See Hidden Figures.
I watched this movie last night. I agree with 100% of everything you said here. As a black software engineer, the first thing I did today was basically tell my other black and brown male and female colleagues who are also engineers to go see this movie and to take their children to see it. I told one of my colleagues to buy this the blu-ray to show her baby daughter multiple times when she's older.
(spoiler coming up)

My mom's a RN, who went to university in Long Island in the late 60s for her bachelors in nursing. When Octavia Spencer's character checked out a book on Fortran from the library, it reminded me of what my mother told me about how she had to learn Fortran for one quarter as part of a requirement for all science majors at the time in the turn of the decade. This was in the late 60s/early 70s. When I got my first real desktop machine in 1990, she was sitting there next to me learning DOS and the rudimentary apps (word perfect, lotus, and print shop pro). Today when we argue about things, it's usually how much computer crap, old iOS and Android devices that she has in the house.

long story short, watch this movie. I cheered, laughed, felt excited, felt inspired, and started to ball-up at the end. You also see a side of John Glenn's story that we never knew. He put his faith and trust into these women and wanted these black female mathematicians to succeed and they did. I think that's not a tall-tale but an actual piece of history that was never told.

Honestly, I can see this movie truly pissing off racists, such as politicians, teachers and administrators.
