Goddamnit, Stranger. @ozchrisrock / @chrisrockoz is not Chris Rock, and he/she/it is a notorious content-stealer: if you see a "funny" tweet from it, it's a 100% lock that it's lifted from someone else.

Chris Rock, the comedian, is @chrisrock on twitter.

So... obviously I'm the furthest thing from a Trump supporter (click my history) but... we're all aware that the 5% number is effectively a hoax, right? And that this is not even slightly a controversial statement?

"Hoax" is, of course, a deliberately inflammatory word to use. But the limitations of the top-line federal unemployment percentage numbers are well-known and have been largely unchanged for the last 30-40 years at least: the top-line number is the percentage of people in the labor force who are currently out of work. If you have stopped looking for work, you are not accounted in that number.

To a certain extent this is necessary: the obvious reason being that if a lot of people are not working because they're retired and living on savings, it doesn't tell you anything interesting about the economy to know that the unemployment rate has gone "up" because of that. Likewise if more 18 year olds are going to college than last year rather than looking for fulltime work, that doesn't necessarily mean that the economy is doing badly.

But if labor force participation has dropped dramatically because a large number of people have simply given up on the idea that they will ever get a job again, and are either on disability, welfare or living on the good will of their families... that's bad. And you can have "low unemployment" even while millions of people are out of work and consider themselves to be out of work.

And crucially, that is exactly what has happened in this country since the 2008 financial crisis: vast numbers of formally employable workers have simply vanished from the labor force. They're not visible in that 5% number, but they still exist, and a hell of a lot of them are voting for Trump. And if you turn around and try to tell them that unemployment is "low" and that there has been a "recovery" from the crisis, they are pretty justified in calling that statement a lie and a hoax.

Jul 29 Doctor Memory commented on Trump Says You Have to Vote for him Even if you Don't Like Him.
Michelle Obama seems to be incredibly happy to return to private life, there is little chance that the Democrats are going to get a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate this year, and there is even less chance that the nomination of someone who hasn't been a practicing lawyer for over a decade and who has zero judicial experience wouldn't cause at least a few Democrats in purple states to break ranks on trying to stop a filibuster. It's a nice daydream, but it's not gonna happen.
Jul 25 Doctor Memory commented on Kshama Sawant Shows Up at the DNC to Tell Bernie Sanders Supporters to Vote for Jill Stein.
@17: yeah, I got that. The problem is that it's an near-completely irrelevant thing to say in the context of a question about the safety/efficacy of vaccinations. It's like being asked if you think cigarette smoking causes cancer and saying "well of course there's strong evidence that cigarettes are carcinogenic, but we need to investigate the conflicts of interest between the FDA regulators (from Monsanto!) and the pharmaceutical companies that profit off of cancer treatments." It's an intentionally misleading answer that serves no purpose other than to pander to crazy people and muddy the very clear facts.

There is zero, repeat zero evidence that there has been any sort of regulatory capture issue that has swept either a safety or efficacy concern about vaccines under the rug, and anyone making that assertion bears the burden of providing that evidence. There is rather a lot of evidence that the "concerns" about vaccinations have been ginned up from whole cloth by a group of hucksters and charlatans, and I expect a viable candidate for president of the united states to be smart enough to know that.

@8 Stein herself, a graduate of Harvard Medical School, does not appear to be anti-vax personally. As far as anyone knows she vaccinated her kids, and inasmuch as you can parse any meaning at all out of her infamous word-salad salad answer to that question, she acknowledged that vaccines are effective.

The problem is that she is reflexively unable to not give an answer to that question without pandering to the lunatic fringe contingent of her own party, which believes that there is no question about science or health policy that cannot be succinctly answered by yelling "Monsanto! GMOs! Big Pharma! Chemtrails!"

Whether a willingness to indulge the special feelings of complete idiots on the topic of vaccinations is better or worse than being directly anti-vax herself is, of course, a personal judgment call.

Here are just a few

Yes, eight is a very, very, very few. Extremely few. Resoundingly few. In a country of 400 million people, statistically hard to differentiate from zero. So points for unintentional honesty I guess?
May 31 Doctor Memory commented on This Election Cycle, the Libertarian Party is on the Cutting Edge of Bonkers.
Ah, the LP-USA. If you were unfamiliar with the institution you'd think that 2016 would be a bonanza year for them. After all, large numbers of registered republicans describe themselves as libertarian or libertarian-leaning, and the GOP nominee is an addled egomaniac with no more interest in curbing state power than he has in being married to a woman with visible wrinkles. All the LP-USA should have to do is nominate a legit-seeming candidate and they can carry off 15% of the vote without trying and teach the GOP a harsh lesson about ignoring their natural base at the local chamber of commerce...

...except that of course the LP-USA is a clown show. Has always been a clown show, and very much prefers being a clown show. Stripping beardo there is just the tip of the iceberg: go ask your local LP party chair what he (no need to worry about pronouns here: it's a dude) thinks about child abuse laws. Or child prostitution laws. Or private ownership of anti-tank rockets. Or private ownership of nuclear weapons.

Oh, and please note that beardo-thong man there has an enormous iron cross tattoo on one of his shoulders, so that's charming too.

Apr 25 Doctor Memory commented on Savage Love Letter of the Day: Boyfriend Slow-Walking His Divorce.
Good lord, IW. Your boyfriend already blew up his marriage, lost his job, did lord knows how much damage to his relationship with his kids, and moved to a new state to be with you. And now you're regularly picking fights with him because his divorce, which from your own account is doing nothing more to harm you than taking longer than you expected, isn't finalized yet?

You seem like a real prize.
Mar 29 Doctor Memory commented on Kshama Sawant Takes Her Push for Rent Control to Small Businesses.
There's at least an obvious moral case for residential rent control, even if the actual evidence suggests that nobody has yet found a way to implement it that's not a practical disaster.

But rent control for for-profit businesses? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck a whole bunch of that.

#9 beat me to it, but I feel like it needs to be called out. If you decide that you want to have the baby, despite the adjacency to this clusterfuck?

GET A LAWYER
GET A LAWYER
GET A LAWYER NOW

Your boyfriend has already demonstrated that he's not acting in good faith and that he's very good at keeping his actual intentions and plans secret from you. You cannot trust that he will keep any verbal agreement he offers with regards to custody, visitation, and the involvement of his other two lovers. If despite all that you decide that you're keeping the pregnancy, lawyer the fuck up post haste: any deal you make with these idiots, you want in writing.
