@8: We can only pray the gun laws are as comprehensive and effective as the ones related to drugs, because those sweet-ass laws took care of drugs in Chicago and everywhere else in the US - it turns out you can't physically import or traffc products that millions of people want as long as there are laws on the books.

@7 What someone chooses to ingest is none of your business, or mine. If after ingesting those substances they harm other people or come to you looking for a handout, fine, you have a say, but until then if someone wants to sit on his or her couch and take a trip to a parallel universe while watching TV, who gives a shit?

The criminalization of more or less every aspect of life provides a pretext for control freaks of every stripe to selectively harass those groups they do not favor, whether driven by racism, politics, or plain old sociopathy. I 100% agree with Goldy on this point and would like to see more agitation in this topic.

@10: If it's about Sandy Hook, then why wouldn't you want to take away guns? The guns used passed through a background check, adding additional background checks does zero about the next guy who wants to be famous and is willing to kill his own mother on the way there.

@18: Republicans are perfectly content with governance so long as what is being governed is the flow of cash to their favored constituencies. I think you draw too fine a distinction between the teams - 97% of what either party is focused on is managing massive transfers of wealth to their (largely identical) backers, and spending 3% of their effort on wedge-y tidbits and issues that will convince 51% of voters to settle for them come election time.

I don't have a better idea, by the way - every alternative that's been tried is worse...
