@41, please look up "rape by fraud." There are other applicable laws here.

@27, "Rape can only be about failure to get consent to engage in sexual activity before or during such activity. I'm afraid the premise of this article is a bit of a stretch, but by all means, drag this guy through the mud, because he is legitimately an asshole, but not a criminal."

"Failure to get consent" is fuzzier than you seem to think, though. What if A consents to sex with B under the explicit agreement that B will use a condom - and then they have sex, but B does NOT use a condom? That's a consent problem based on lies - in this case there was no consent, because the consent was under a condition that was not met - but only because of a lie. There's a continuum here, and I won't claim it is easy to judge where the lines should be: but "rape by fraud" laws exist in numerous states for a reason.

@29, "If telling women that they should call the police if they've been raped instead of gossiping about it on social media, then I guess I'll mansplain too."

So, maybe - AFTER you solve the problem of police not taking rape seriously and frequently re-traumatizing rape victims - AFTER you solve the problem of prosecutors not taking rape cases as seriously as they should - AFTER you solve the problems of hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits in the United States - AFTER you solve the problems of judges frequently not sentencing CONVICTED RAPISTS to anything more than a slap on the wrist - maybe then - AND ONLY THEN - do you - maybe - get to have an opinion about what women should and should not do the immediate aftermath of horrific trauma.

Until then, all you're doing is identifying yourself as part of the problem.

@1, I like Radiolab but agree that they often dumb things down in irritating ways. And I've never bought this framing: "On each episode of Radiolab, the hosts go through the process of learning about a compelling topic as the show unfolds, rather than the usual journalistic process of understanding everything about a topic before explaining it." Having listened for a long time, it seems much more likely to me that this is pretense, just as seem the "faith vs. science" type arguments that the two hosts occasionally get into.

Risk is too great. Elections in this country are strongly driven by the interaction of the incumbent party + the economy. If the economy happens to tank in the next year, the chances are that the Republican - WHOEVER THEY ARE, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE SAYING - will win.

As well, as others have noted - Trump getting the nomination pushes the Overton Window into horribly extreme new territory.

He's an idiot. But I'm far more embarrassed for Dan Savage. Gary J. Blige has 261 followers (right now): who gives a shit what he thinks, Dan?

Why call him out on a post on the Slog? What purpose does it solve to ridicule him in public? Are you that thin-skinned or sensitive, Dan, that you need reassurance that he's wrong?

Fight at your weight class, Dan: quit punching down. It's boring and plays into the (otherwise bullshit) "Dan Savage is a bully" narrative.

Why would anyone expect Trump to abide by this? If he loses the primary, why on earth wouldn't he just claim (perhaps accurately!) that a ton of people begged him to run as an independent, and ~I didn't betray the GOP: the GOP betrayed America!~. It's the simplest move in the world, and the people who love Trump for being brash and tactless will love him EVEN MORE for it.

@10 Goddamnit, that posted before I was done snarking on it.

"And Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee for president. This was never in any doubt, so the fact that it's been "leaked" that she's announcing her candidacy tomorrow isn't particularly surprising. Yeah, yeah, you're running for President, we know."

Hmmm. You would have said exactly this same thing - she's inevitable, there's no doubt - 8 years ago. We know this because many people said so - it's online if you look for it.

Some amount of humility in predictions like this would seem Warren'ted (SEE WHAT I DID THERE).
