bethany, try not to market booze to much to washington state high school kids, ok. the center for disease control says that underage drinking leads to higher teen pregnancy rates. did you read that state of the worlds mothers report? it says the united states is the worst place in the industrialized world for newborn babies.

The Seattle area also has well-paid blue-collar jobs: aircraft assembly, shipyard work, machine shops, stevedoring, commercial construction, etc. There are women in all these fields, but more men. Women can work hard for long hours, but more men than women can handle a jackhammer or a big chain saw, or drive a big yellow bulldozer, or conduct a choo-choo train, or hoist a garbage can full of trash, or stevedore it up on a hot summer day. This has nothing to do with discrimination and everything to do with men's superiority over women.

Women have made huge strides in indoor work: law, accounting, finance, waiting tables, changing diapers, mopping floors, academia, and government. Why, this very issue of The Stranger is practically festooned—festooned like a stevedore's clipboard, we like to say around the old newspaperman's lunch table—with writers of the feminine persuasion. (prez, and you guys, look ok ignore bruce ramsey he is fukin dumb. also, i feel that there may be alot of underreported income disparity between male and female workers who work the same exact jobs, and women also get passed up for alot of jobs too, that they are evenly qualified for. which is why you don't have many women chiefs of police and big truck drivers. thats the main stuff i think. if someone has a higher skillset and makes more money just because of that reason alone, then that is not part of the sexist income disparity problem found in seattle, i think.

12: i hear you, i haven't driven a car in 20 years, but i don't think CDC (who wrote that list i put there) handles bus or transit stuff. im fine with "taxing beer for buses" though, my man mike mcginn over there would be fine with that idea too.

i like that cdc link there:

What Can Be Done:

States can:

-Enforce 0.08% blood alcohol concentration and minimum legal drinking age laws.
-Expand the use of sobriety checkpoints.
-Require ignition interlocks for everyone convicted of drinking and driving, starting with their first offense.
-Consider including strategies to reduce binge drinking—such as increasing alcohol taxes—to reduce drinking and driving, since the two behaviors are linked.
-Pass primary enforcement seat belt laws that cover everyone in the car.

jay,

i am sorry i made the rob mckenna supporters, i mean right-wing bar owners, upset with you, im also sorry you have to hear their whiny bullshit now. i do agree with adam kline that using the beer tax for dui related stuff is a good idea, its seems a responsible move on his part. prez, ALEC is just mad at jay here because he is looking to increase tax revenue with his proposed budget, thats all this shit here is about.

anna, thank you for reporting this. i am tired of the lewis powell memo and its associated mindset. the thing makes for these bad decisions by prez and sebalius. i think the goddamn thing just makes people stupid and cruel altogether. and, also, women's reproductive rights should not be filtered through someone from Kansas for fucks sake prez. (dude, wise the fuck up, you went harvard, i know people who went till the 9th grade with more sense than you people sometimes..)
