To all the predictable complaints about how of the victims were white the media would be all over it: you're wrong. 14 year old black kid executed a one year old white child in front of his mother a month or so back, far more sickening a crime than this random thug-life non-fatal shooting. But the New Orleans story has received a lot more exposure.

Lot of people were shot but it's still a dog bites man story, just more men. People are used to thugs firing randomly and unless it's their neighborhood they understandably don't give a shit.

After 9/11, the Mosque in Northgate was overflowing with sympathy flowers from Seattle liberals anxious to show that they held no ill feelings towards Islamics just because a few of their brethren blew a couple of thousand people to an early death.

If these guys turn out to be right-wing nuts, I don't expect to see a single shoplifted tulip at Republican party HQ.

If, however, they turn out to be Islamists, I do expect Slog to be overrun with shows of solidarity with peace-loving Muslims, and with hatred of people who question the wisdom of importing large numbers of said Muslims. More so the latter--because it's not really any genuine concern for Muslims or civil rights or what have you, as much as it is hating the Other within your own white/Western tribe that drives the rage of the Slogger.

From the dozen or so comments to this post and the previous one by students/parents of the teacher in question, it sounds like he's high on emotion and entertainment value, and low on even-handed argument. Hard to say for sure, but it seems likely that he's more in the business of activism than teaching.

Of course, a lot of people will insist there's no difference, and that's possibly the root of the problem.
