Jun 28 heartfelt commented on Pro-Choice Activists Might Want to Emulate These Gay Boys.
Um, I think folks may have misunderstood the court ruling. According to what I have read, the Supremes were not in favor of harassment and in fact pointed out that where there was a problem at a specific abortion clinic there should be a local ordinance/law passed to protect people from harassment. What they struck down was the right of the State to pass a state-wide buffer zone that included all clinics regardless of whether there was a problem or not. It was a ruling over jurisdiction and not the specific problem.
Jun 16 heartfelt commented on Male Judges with Daughters Are More Likely to Treat Women Like Human Beings.
I would guess that the men may view the wives as "other" but the daughters as as least half themselves and therefore an extension of themselves.
Apr 24 heartfelt commented on It's Been A Couple of Days—How Are You Feeling About That Game of Thrones Rape Scene?.
Let's face it, GRRM's books are Grim and I am not a fan of Grim, but that having been said, the characters he has created present truly courageous moral dilemmas and conundrums that create useful debate over the simplistic moral perspective we are usually served up by our regular media. The reason for the upset over the rape scene is that GRRM's most powerful moral debater in the books is Jaime and the scene as presented in the tv series is clearly a rape and becomes a direct defilement of the best ideas the books offer us.
Apr 16 heartfelt commented on Survey Reveals Men's Rights Activists Are Almost Entirely White, 17 to 20 Years Old.
The day that women (as a group) make more money than men, and leadership positions are mostly held by women, is the day I will agree with that MRAs have a beef, but not one day before.
Jan 25 heartfelt commented on A Livable Minimum Wage Could Decrease Unemployment by Decreasing Demand for Second Jobs.
Goldy, I liked your article a lot, mostly because you bring forward some issues that have not gotten much play. Raising the minimum wage would certainly cut back on the hours needed to be worked to get by (i.e. have enough food and shelter). There are differences state by state in how much money is needed to get by (mostly due to the cost of shelter), but currently the cost of living exceeds the minimum wage by a great deal in all states. Raising the minimum wage could possibly have the side effect of opening up jobs. The only way we will find out is for someplace to have the great experiment. I hope Seattle will move to a $15 minimum and then we will find out what happens.

I have read several studies that support meditation in a school setting. These new statistics add to a growing consensus that meditation (particularly mindfulness meditation) reduces stress and increases the ability to focus. It is a very good skill to have, as I have found out myself during the economic stresses of the recession.
Jan 20 heartfelt commented on Married While Feminist.
Feminism keeps evolving, and that is a good thing because it means that some cultural wins of the past like getting the vote and being able to work outside the house have become so accepted in the US that new goals can be considered. I can understand your dilemma regarding marriage, but a lot of the sting around marriage has gone the way of the dodo (i.e. ye old loss of property rights, loss of personal rights, a kind of imprisonment) and what you did was what you can now do, which is to protect the one you care about. Nothing to apologize for as far as I am concerned. You were exercising your rights. The rights other previous feminists fought for you to have.
Jan 6 heartfelt commented on Hunter With Popular TV Show Fired For Saying Something Controversial!.
Given that the actual text of the 2nd amendment is as follows: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." I am mystified that the part about "well regulated" continues to be understood by some as "no regulations are allowed"...

Dec 29, 2013 heartfelt commented on Making the Right Connection.
Thank you for posting this Charles. It is a surprising and interesting response by the people of Portugal that is worth pondering. I am curious about how they made the connection between the bin collector strike and the banks. Low pay is clear, but usually it is the employer that gets the backlash and not an external player such as the banks. Have the banks done something recently that raised their ire?
