commented on Report: Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Students Subjected to Appalling Levels of Violence
I haven't dug into the methodology (and I won't), but I suspect it vastly undercounts the amount of violence experienced by straight boys. I don't know a single man of my generation (I graduated high school in 1998) who didn't have the living shit beaten out of them at least once during their school days, and if you are like me (and I wasn't unusual) it happened more or less once a year between ages 6 and 15 or so. Most of the times, that meant going home with a black eye or two, but sometimes it would be more serious. I never ended up in the hospital but there were days when I stayed home "sick".
Anyhow, not sure what my point is, and I'm not trying to argue that the status quo is sufficient... when it comes to boys, my mentality is that it is mathematically impossible for GBTQ kids to have been threatened/injured/bullied more frequently than straight children because the baseline rate is already 100%. My heart does not break for them and I'm oddly a bit frosty that "certain kids" should be exempt from what most of us considered a rite of passage.
commented on Here's Matt Hickey on FetLife, Looking for "Sluts" in Vegas
Let's accept as an argument that Hickey is indeed a Dirtbag Rapist, regardless of the laws. That's not really an extreme stance.
It still seems untoward to hound this guy for significantly more-legal activity. There's nothing potentially rapey about this: It says, "hay wanna get drunk and let me take naughty pictures of you, and maybe fuck?" I mean it's no Shakespeare but it's not a part of a ruse. All of us use alcohol to get laid - The Stranger even has a weekly column devoted to it.
It also always dismays me when people feel fully justified in singling out one person for extra punishment based on a personal connection to a crime. It's like you're mugging from being a racist pile of trump.
commented on Seattle Police Are Looking for Info About Attacks Targeting Black People in the Central District
I saw this circulating on social media yesterday - the exact same screen capture. I was a little dubious then - strong lack of details, unidentified source, strange, move-like timeline ("Just took a screenshot" - in the screenshot. huh?).
I mean, the original texters should have no problem stepping forward. We'll see if a victim is identified. This sounds more like a narrative-builder than reality to me, at this moment.
commented on Looks Like There Was Only One Shooter In Dallas
Let's all remember:
When a sniper was taking out cops, they decided the suspect was the only black guy with a gun they could remember
And they imagined that there were multiple shooters
This tells you how they see the world.
