I strongly believe in gay rights but I'm also a fiscal conservative. I'm exactly the sort of young person the fundies are driving away. As long as the Republican party is the evangelical nutjob party, I will never vote for them. Every time I meet a conflicted person, for example somebody pro-gun but also pro-civil freedom, I encourage them to vote for any party other than Republican. It doesn't help that Republicans can's even do fiscal conservatism correctly either.

When they say there is evidence for reincarnation, I HOPE they mean reincarnation in the sense Buddha meant, and NOT the sense that Westerners usually interpret reincarnation. Westerners look at everything through Judeo-Christian eyes, they think reincarnation means your immortal soul moving from a dead body to a living body. Buddha taught that when you die, your energy becomes new life, but that new life is NOT the same person as the old life. In that sense, reincarnation is consistent with science. Molecules turn from one thing into another thing.

So yeah, Buddhism actually is compatible with an atheist and materialist worldview. So is Daoism, and probably a few other religions. The problem is, religion is work. I don't see the point of pressuring people to get into something that is a lot of work. It's like urging everybody to play football.

@13 I agree. I think this guy's problem is mostly social, not physical. He needs to make some friends, especially female friends, and be less awkward. Maybe stop hating himself. Even ugly guys can get an attractive girlfriend if they have the right social skills.

Obama's plan is hardly different than Romney's. Both parties have nearly identical policies about military, corporate welfare, and constitutional rights. They only differ on social issues. Under Obama's administration taxes are lower than they have been since Reagan, essentially making Obama Republican. The idea that Obama is a socialist is a stupid joke. It doesn't matter who you vote for.

@10 Manipulative behavior is very common in relationships, it's not always bullying or abuse. The word manipulation has a negative stigma, but it is morally neutral and if it makes both people happier and able to remain together, there is no problem.

I like seeing this reprinted, this was one of my favorites.

I'm fat and although I have never had a jerk boyfriend, I hate it when people talk about how disgusting some fat person is in front of me. They always justify it by saying I'm not REALLY fat, I'm just overweight. People who are REALLY fat are horrible. This excuse is bullshit, I'm 300 pounds. The only reason they do not consider me fat is because they made a rule for themselves that they are not allowed to befriend fat people, so cognitive dissonance tricks them into thinking I'm not actually fat. My own mother pointed at a fat person and said I should shoot her if she ever became that fat. People are dicks.

Nobody with a brain can think gay marriage will have any negative effects. Look at the states and countries with legalized gayness. Nothing bad has happened. You can't fight facts.

Gay people are a tiny minority. There are more seriously mentally ill people in America (6%) than there are homosexuals. A minority of that gay minority are drug abusers. If you think drug abusers are unfit to raise children, does that mean straight couples with a history of drug abuse should not be allowed to legally marry?
