@26

We've raised bus fares by around 50% since the recession hit.

For a place that hates private automobiles and their drivers, I find it surprisingly easy to get around by car when I want to.

But Seattle government has nothing to do with this discussion. Metro is not a City department, they're County. And the County's tax authority is restricted to it's current level by State law.

I'm moving to Burien in a couple of weeks, because my rent in the Central District has become unaffordable and I'm not poor enough to qualify for subsidized housing.

I'll be making mortgage payments about the same as my rent now. My commute will stay about the same, it will just change direction.

Sounds like a job for the surveillance state - CCTV cameras watching high-theft bike racks.

I assume, Chris, that like a good citizen you reported these thefts to SPD, so that their crime-mapping and "preemptive policing" strategies will be up to date?

@3 My wife volunteers with Seattle Parks.

They're taught that if they come across a couple in the act, don't interfere. People unexpectedly interrupted by a stranger mid-coitus usually get very upset and act unpredictably. Just get out of the immediate area and call the cops.

I used to deliver pizzas in there.

And finally, he's running for Mayor of Seattle, not county exec or a regional office. He needs to be aggressively advocating for more infrastructure money in Seattle, not giving it for free to the region at large.

A mayors job is to fight for the City's self-interest, not the regions.

Also, you say that no ST3 ballot measure can pass without overwhelming support here in Seattle, and that overwhelming support isn't coming for a measure that doesn't lay down track within city limits.

But that's wrong. Seattle will vote for basically any transit package, whether it directly benefits the city or not. Seattle will get a cheap token project, and the Seattle Subway will be dead.

So, this density-driven formula, anyone willing to expound on that?

Because right now we've got zero information and a "trust me".

SAE is basically the only thing keeping Sound Transit politically viable in the suburbs, and the suburbs won't go for any new density-driven formula if it doesn't let them build massive park & rides in low-density wastelands alongside freeways. Which any serious formula definitely would not.

Apr 25 Lack Thereof commented on Why I Oppose Sub-Area Equity for Sound Transit.
Ditching sub-area equity will ensure that Seattle tax dollars are spent building an endless procession of suburban Park & Rides, and that a Ballard line will never be built until every suburban city has a Link stop.

@6, 17

The big difference here is that this project, not even the locals want it. I'd be more willing to pay for it if they actually supported it.

I'll gladly pay for useful, desired projects in remote parts of the state.
