@16, eesh, I never thought of that.

I don't particularly have an opinion about the secret fetishist shoe salesclerk, but it reminds me of a little episode from growing up that's got to be in the grey area at least...

When I was about 11 years old my family was shopping in the nearest city from our small town, and I needed a new pair of shoes, so we stopped at some big chain store. The sales clerk just happened to be a former student of my dad's (from middle school, & probably in his 20s when we ran into him.) While I don't remember any particular comments, etc., there was something obviously weird about the way he helped me try on my shoes. Mainly I just remember that he laced them up tighter than I'd ever seen shoes laced up before and tried to tell us that was the proper way to do it. Back in the car, I remarked that it was pretty weird the way he tried to lace up my shoes so tight, and my dad mentioned that even as a student, probably about my age, the guy had just been fascinated with feet, like for some reason he was always measuring other students' feet, etc... Pretty sure at the time I'd never heard of a foot fetish, but it sure seems clear now.

I don't really feel too weird about it, I guess, but I hope the guy found work doing something other than helping kids try shoes on since then...

Wait, I think maybe this whole thing might be just a metaphor to help me understand why my dear & formerly-freespirited friend suddenly rushed into a marriage in one of those exclusive-by-default relationships that didn't even seem to be going well for her in the first place and of course now can't really talk that much anymore. Some dude who was a friend of some lady on the internet supposedly did something even way more extreme & baffling, it seems. K, got it.

Considering the happiness that Calvin's music has brought me over the years, if I ever make millions of dollars, I'll pay off every dime he owes. Unfortunately I don't have any money at the moment either.

people, many of you above are reading Mudede all wrong. whereas you seem to imagine that this short post might be summed up as "I shore do hate Canada.. yep," I might point you instead in the direction of this section here to re-read & reconsider:

What to make of this cold Canadian custom? What does it tell us about that society? Does it have anything to do with, say, the country’s relatively generous welfare system? Public generosity has rendered acts of private generosity unnecessary? Is this maybe why bartenders in the United States are more generous with their drinkers? Here, private acts of merriment make up for the meanness of our social welfare programs?

There's actually two places in Seattle where you can take circus classes, so.. not one but two, 'cause it's-- that's the kind of place Seattle is.

I'll bet Don Ruffin wrote a regular old letter to the editor first with coherent if unremarkable points in it, then he decided to apply the Burroughs/Gysin cut-up method to it to reveal latent meanings in his text. It's a little-appreciated fact that Sarah Palin also employed the technique extensively in her spoken word performances.

@13, well there is the Seattle Fault, much smaller than the big fault off the coast, but with potential to cause major local damage. As far as tsunamis, still more like 2m in Elliott Bay, though.

@3 take your peanut butter to the suburbs, mom. I don't frequent restaurants that serve expensive dishes like this either, but this is not a step in the wrong direction. The variety of interesting flavors around us is amazing, and this dish is making use of them in an interesting way.

Also: vegetables from the ground...?! Um, yep.

@13, thank you! seriously, for fuck's sake, people, what is wrong with you? I was about to write just what Urgutha wrote and was baffled at all the other responses. LW, yes, it is okay for you to be a decent person and reach out to your ex with an apology. If you want people to never talk to again, start with the dimwit haters who regularly comment on post-2014 Slog.
