I read this whole long thing and I still couldn't tell you exactly why he thinks this makes for good art. I suppose someone might claim that it's good art because it gets people talking about it, but it seems to me that it only gets people talking because Brendan takes him seriously and writes about him as if this is art worth paying attention to. If not for that I kind of think you'd get a few "Did you hear about the guy who had his arm shot and called it art? Ha! What a nutjob!" type comments and then people would forget about it. It seems really implausible that this piece is going to get anyone to think about themselves or their place in the world or about violence or ownership of art or... Much of anything. So I ask again, why does Ryan think this is good art? And if he doesn't have a good answer, why is Kiley giving this so much attention?

It doesn’t look like he’s intentionally lying. It looks like he’s woefully misinformed. And how can a person be so misinformed here in The Information Age? Because right there on the internet, along with all the facts, is a mountain of bullshit, and we somehow have lost the ability to tell the difference. Instead of believing what’s most supported by the evidence, you can believe whatever you want and it’s easy to find something somewhere on the internet to support your belief. And if someone tries to correct you or to point out that your “evidence” is really bullshit, you can defend yourself by saying, “hey, I have a right to my opinion and you can have yours!” We want the decisions made by our government be based on facts instead of just random opinions, but that would require acknowledging that some people are experts who can be trusted to get things right a lot more often than any random person who can make a blog post.

Sadly, the democratization of knowledge is undermining democracy.

Is that a state constitutional requirement, that property must be taxed equally? So, for example, we couldn't have a progressive property tax without changing the constitution? (I was just thinking it might be easier to change property tax structure than to impose an income tax, but maybe it's hamstrung by the same constitutional problem.)

He's reading that teleprompter like he has no idea what's about to appear on it. Reminds me a little of GWB reading his teleprompter and occasionally throwing in a little emphasis on the ends of sentences when he finally understood what he was saying.
