May 6 Big Adventure Steve commented on Etymology of the Day: Shyster and Skeezy.
Etymology
US, 1992. Variant of sleazy, possibly influenced by sketchy (“dubious, unnerving”); alternatively analyzed as blend of sketchy and sleazy.

I didn't think they had faucets back in the pre-indoor-plumbing days. It turns out he got his Bible all wrong: "A quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day..."

Now I don't know what to think.

"The baby and the 2-year-old child are safe and have been turned over to family."

Uhh... not sure that I'd consider that family to be "safe".
Mar 6 Big Adventure Steve commented on Shanik Is Not Vij's.
I went to Vij's once and was disappointed. Not by the food, though -- by the time we'd waited for two hours in near-fainting hunger, we were so exhausted and famished and overwhelmed by the crowd and noise that we just couldn't enjoy ourselves. I'm sure the food was good, but but we just couldn't tell any more.

On the other hand, Vij's cookbook is excellent.
Feb 25 Big Adventure Steve commented on Sound and Fury: The Controversy Over "A Piece of Work" at On the Boards.
I saw the show last Thursday and hated it. I've never seen so many people leave mid-show.

As a grad school thesis, it would have been successful. As a touring production in front of $25 seats, it was a failure. There was more potential locked up in the idea, and I wish a good editor or mentor had sent them back to the drawing board before sending this show on its way.
Feb 3 Big Adventure Steve commented on I Just Googled "Guacamole Secrets".
One of my Mexico City friends added a bit of strong chicken stock (or chicken stock paste) (although this might make your vegetarian friends angry).

One of my friends from Morelia adds a bit of milk.

Jan 1 Big Adventure Steve commented on Congress Is Broken. So Let's Make it Bigger.
I've got a counter-proposal which (I think) is more feasible: enact a law requiring congressional districts to align with zip code boundaries. Zip codes are efficiently distributed across the map and sized proportional to population density, and are not gerrymandered. They are relatively much smaller than congressional districts, so many of them would be needed to build each district. Gerrymandering would still be possible, of course, and in some cases it is even desired to ensure equitable representation.

I think this proposal would add a small measure of sanity to the process.

Wait, there's a void on the religious right?
