@8 Classic. Any criticism of the State of Israel and suddenly you're Hitler II: Electric Boogaloo. Israel != Judaism.

They made us read The Bluest Eye in high school without a trigger warning - picket Toni Morrison's house! Life is shocking and traumatic - I demand inoffensive pablum!

I still remember my middle school history class when we were forced to watch footage from liberation of Dachau. I can't imagine a teacher getting away with that now. A pity.

@36: It wasn't always that way, you know. Like most of the mid-west, Kansas never was an especially left-leaning place, but the state had a strong tendency toward populist-flavored moderates. Even 10 years ago Kansans regularly split the ticket with Republican representatives and Democratic governors - Kathleen Sebelius was elected to her second term in a near landslide. But yeah, now it's twisting in the wind under tea-party hegemony. I hope the practical people of Kansas come to their senses, but yeah - I'm not exactly holding my breath.

@28: I'm not an expert in copyright law, but since the State of Bavaria does not give permission to reproduce the work, printing it would be a violation of copyright right? So like I said - printing Mein Kampf would be illegal. At any rate, my point was that in most other Western nations restrictions on hate speech as incitement are much more loosely defined. Considering the growth of far-right extremism in the last 20 years, I don't see these as particularly effective.
Jan 31 zivilisierter Wurm commented on "When a trans woman gets called a man, that is an act of violence.".
@22 When the consequences of that speech are "it made me feel bad about myself" - no, it shouldn't be limited. If someone is following you around shouting the wrong pronouns, that's harassment. If they're misgendering you with a baseball bat, that's assault.

The US is something of an outlier in that unless your expression is an immediate cause of violence or harm, the US recognizes few Constitutional limits on speech. If you don't like it, I recommend moving to say, Germany, where printing Mein Kampf is illegal. Yet somehow that hasn't slowed the spread of neo-nazism.

The policy that some ideas are "too dangerous" to be expressed is invariably more dangerous to freedom than the idea itself.
Jan 28 zivilisierter Wurm commented on To Queers Bitching About Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Full disclosure: I'm not a Macklemore fan. Personally I think he's corny as fuck. But goddamn this whole argument is some sophomore Comparative History of Ideas shit. Music may well be an equalizing space but the Grammys sure as fuck aren't - it's a masturbatory Colosseum for the Recording Industry, and yeah: in a perfect world Kendrick would have gotten that award. Kendrick also spits some despicable shit - rap is full of contradictions. It's heart is the conflict between speaking to the circumstances of oppression (drugs, violence, poverty, community) and protesting it.

Macklemore certainly benefited from the institutional racism of the National Academy of Recording Artists (and the relative cachet of gay culture in Hollywood), but hip hop as a genre and a culture is universally accessible. Hence its popularity.

So is the issue that Macklemore is a white man rapping? That's he's a straight man rapping about being gay? That whiteness gives him access to the fruits of the industry? How about: why do we value licking that brass ring to begin with? Or maybe: are any of these things more noxious than the usual 3-ring Bullshit Circus that is top40 rap?

Basically: fuck the Grammys - they are the heart of corniness, and corniness is the antipathy of hip hop. While you're at it: fuck identity politics. All it accomplishes is internecine academic bullshit and self-defeat in the pursuit of ideological purity. If you actually devote any crumb of emotional or intellectual significance to this shit you are worse than a sponge, you are an obstacle to real progress.

First they came for the luxury yachts, and I did not speak out -- Because luxury yachts are a depreciating asset and I had instead invested in classic Italian cars. Then they came for the Winter homes in Arizona, and I did not speak out - Because I had divested from that market. Then they came for the Maseratis - And there was no one left to speak for me!

@36: The Washington State Hunting Safety Program probably helped reduce hunting accidents. But I'd bet that zoning the I-90 corridor and Middle Fork (Washington's highest-traffic trails) as No Shooting had a bigger impact.

Seriously, Fall is nuts between Issaquah and Ellensburg. Hiking along Tinkham Road a couple years ago I had a pair of hillbillies hop out the woods to shout at me "you fucking tree-huggers come out here on purpose to scare off the deer!" You're a 1/4 mile from I-90 on a forest service road, but it's my fault for spooking your buck? How about lace up your fucking boots and get out in the woods? Or is it just too much work if the deer isn't 50 ft from the road?

Now I'm friends with plenty of responsible hunters/gun owners. But people are fucking morons, and a government of the people has every business regulating public spaces to ensure the safety of its constituents.

@29 - I believe Copernicus's heliocentric model assumed that the planets held circular orbits, so his model didn't fit the data much better than the Ptolemaic system of "heavenly spheres." It's interesting that even while over-turning the anthropocentric vision of the universe, he found it inconceivable that God would choose an "imperfect" shape like an ellipse to construct the heavens.
