The people here who know nothing about alcoholism make me laugh. It's a disease and the main symptom is denial. On the average, most drunks don't realize they have a problem until way into their lives and many never get help. When they do, they are often in their 40's or 50's and believe me, they suffer for their past wrongs. I'm in my 24th year of sobriety and I can't tell you how many times I wished I'd stop drinking years before I did. As a gay man, I never had children, but I know tons of drunks who did. It's always hard but it's never too late. And I've seen a lot (and I mean a LOT) of people who didn't make it and died of alcoholism or an overdose, often before they reached thirty. Nasty disease, but you cannot help someone who doesn't want to stop.

Staring at a stranger for any reason is not cool.

"Two six packs..." is how I heard this one.

Helvetica Bold is very cute. Some of the funniest drag names I've heard have had me in stitches.

I was very proud of a drag name in thought up for a Puerto Rican friend of mine -- "Bessie Mae Koolo".

When I was 14, I had a best friend who was also gay. But we were NOT having sex -- we were "sisters". This is the most likely explanation that I can think of, but no one else here has seemed to have thought of it (I read most but not all of the posts). If this is the case, they're probably comparing notes on the cutest boys in school or guys in the neighborhood -- all perfectly harmless.

As Dan Savage would say: "Dump the motherfucker already."

@ #14 - I am sure that Dan has said more than once that he often takes the trouble to clean up spelling, grammar etc. And if I were writing such a column, I would probably completely rewrite half the letters I publish, based on the fact that so many people SUCK when it comes to writing composition.

Just sayin'

@25 AA saved my ass 23 years ago and I haven't been high since I walked in the door. I could not stop on my own. My life has improved 1,000% over where I was back then, and I wouldn't go back to that life for anything. I continue to go to AA mostly to help newer people and show them how I stopped drinking, and I have seen many success stories. The only thing I know about "Rational Recovery" is that their agenda seems to be all about destroying AA, and then getting people sober. If that works for anyone, it's fine with me. AA's stated primary pupose is to help alcoholics achieve sobriety. Nobody forces anyone to stay and nobody chases those who choose to leave. I have known many, many people in AA who decided it wasn't for them, left the program and I later found out that they had overdosed or killed themselves. Some of those former AA'ers were very young. I am sure I would have been dead years ago without AA. By the way, I am a devout atheist and I have never had a problem reconciling my "beliefs" with the program.

Sorry, but drug addicts are losers. He may be "highly functioning" with a place to live and a good income, but that will not last forever. Sooner or later, he will hit bottom.

That said, I do agree that addiction is not funny. It killed my brother, who was 41 when he died, extremely intelligent, had a good job, a place to live and a great income. Sort of like your best friend. Help is out there; encourage him to get it.

Having an insanely goodlooking boyfriend is no fun. I've had several.

One was an alcoholic, who would get drunk and accuse me of infidelity. Meanwhile, everytime we went to a bar, there was always a line of guys waiting to meet him and cop a feel while I wasn't looking. Fortunately for me, I sobered up myself 20 years ago, and those type of relationships are a thing of the past.
