You'd think the libertarian, Ayn Rand-types would be up in arms over this: A successful private enterprise now must sell to the not-as-popular state-run entity.

But they're not. Because capitalism isn't about providing value. It's about profit, and that's it.

Seattle has shown that they absolutely, positively, do not want an elevated rapid-transit system. Seattle wants more traffic on the streets, and that's it. Live with what you asked for, folks.

@23 Interesting analysis. Let's try it on you. David Bond Bomb is a hateful person. He even hates babies. He is a real threat to not just babies, but puppies and kittens. Why does he want to stab newborns and eat their flesh? I don't know. Is it because he's a worthless shithead? I don't know. We just know that in terms of being a decent human being, he's nowhere near.

See? I explicitly stated that I don't know why you're such a shitbag. So you have no reason to get upset, you Bill O'Reilly-type partisan.
Nov 17 Some Old Nobodaddy Logged In commented on Republican Candidates Are Taking a Brave Stand Against Terrorism, Facts.
The Republican candidates are spouting nonsense because their entire philosophy depends on easy black/white divisions. Just look at the conservative posts on this thread. Their only defense of the Republicans is an attack on the Dems and "liberals." If you can make the Dems look bad, then whatever pure and utter nonsense espoused by Presidential candidates can be forgiven and swept away.

The time when the world could be explained in easy terms has long since past. (It could never be approached intellectually or to administrate it, but it could be explained that way.) Sadly, there are still hundreds of millions of American that are demanding easy explanations. For them, there is no statement too absurd, ludicrous, obviously false, or exaggerated that they won't accept, as long as it tells them that yes, there are easy answers, Dems are always incompetent, a gun is always the best solution, the Bible is always right, and the only "real" Americans are white.

This is an excellent example of why people like Mr. Mudede are unnecessary. He is not the first person to say something like this. There are three threads right now on my FB feed, beating this subject to death. There are plenty more on reddit and other popular sites. The need for such journalism is long since past. These conversations began almost immediately after the incident was reported, and Mr. Mudede's opinion provides nothing new. Either journalism should redefine itself to reporting the news and only that, or those who write opinion pieces need to elevate themselves far beyond the zeitgeist.

In the wake of tragedy and the outpouring of sympathy, it is inevitable that someone is going to tell us that we're all hypocrites, that it doesn't go far enough, that really we're all just awful and should feel ashamed. It is an example of perfectionism, where nothing will ever satisfy, only absolutes. It is the same kind of attitude that breeds extremism. Real life isn't like that. You can't switch off racism by wagging the finger like a nanny. It is a rock inside the mind, and the biggest thing that will erode it is empathy. Flying a French flag is a big deal to those whose minds have calcified. It is not a cure-all, and to my mind it's under "the least you could do." To some, along with other symbols of compassion, it is a grand gesture. And I'd rather have less isolationism and xenophobia (and finger-wagging) in my world.

Poster child for DTMFA.

"Oh this beautiful glass of fresh milk is so wonderful, except there's a small little shit at the bottom. How can I continue to drink it?" Nope. It won't work. Pour it out and look for another glass. It may be watered down, or goat's milk, but it is much better than the one with the shit in it.

In fact, the race is so boring right now that I'm not even going to bother covering the Democratic debate this weekend.

Even as sarcasm, that is an incredibly stupid sentence.
Nov 13 Some Old Nobodaddy Logged In commented on Models to Feel Bad For.
@31 The point is that advertising makes assholery normal. It is not about being "offensive," it is that the money and ubiquity of the advertising campaign puts people into a reality-model where being an immature asshole is the norm, and something to be aspired to.

I reject your comparison. It is profoundly different.
Nov 11 Some Old Nobodaddy Logged In commented on Savage Love Letter of the Day: Self-Fulfilling Assholery.
@2, yeah, I read that too, and I'd just like to add to your response, "Dude, why do you *let* her?"

She knows she can emotionally manipulate you. So she does. LW, If you *really* want to stay with her, stop being manipulated. Next time one of those "social events" comes up, or you're in public, say 'If you want to leave the party, fine. I'm enjoying myself. Take the car & I'll get a cab home.' or 'If you're going to be a downer at this event, I'm leaving. I would love to have a fun time with you, but I'm not going to coddle you if you choose to be a bitch. I'm going to go to and enjoy myself there. You can stay here or come with, but I'm not interested in you coming if you're going to continue to be a bitch.'
Nov 11 Some Old Nobodaddy Logged In commented on A Few Thoughts About Those Missouri Protesters Blocking That Student Photographer.
I love all the 30-somethings online getting all butt-hurt over this. If they're not blathering from their crotchety old-man chair about how awful student protesters are, they're complaining that the "youth of today" are so complacent and obsessed with their ipads.

Oh, they're also complete absolutists as well. Basically what so many people on this thread and elsewhere are saying is: "All extremists should die."

Yeah. Got it.

I want to thank Ansel for not falling into the absolutists' trap, and writing a very even-handed thoughtful article. Yeah, the "profession" of journalism is a complete and utter joke. That was laid bare in 2002-3, during the run-up to the Great American Disaster (aka the Iraq Invasion). The structures of journalism that sold us that piece of crap are still in place. I don't have any sympathy for any fuckwad that wants to continue the great propaganda machine.
