SL Letter of the Day: Gonna Boil My Laptop After Answering This One.
5, etc. Every regular reader knows Dan was brought up Catholic. That programming goes deep. Why do you think religions work so hard on imprinting on babies? They may not have known the psychology behind it, but they certainly understood the outcome.
The good part is that as we mature, we can choose to overcome our programming. Dan GTFO of the church and chooses to raise his kid in an atheistic home. So what if he still likes the iconography and lapses into mentioning God once in a while. We know what he means.
Another way to look at is this: Didactic people who are desperate to pounce on anything they perceive as being inconsistent, w/o allowing for vernacular figures of speech are bores at best.

White People Do Not Have a Monopoly on Racism.
While this is certainly "racist", I prefer to step back & use the more inclusive term "bigotry." The thought process Mugabe has here is the same used against sexual minorities, different ethnic & religious groups, etc. Groups that are are still "Them, not Us" in the eyes of the bigot, and therefore to be hated.
I think getting hung up on race sidetracks the real issue, which is ridding ourselves of an ancient thought-form that, whatever its uses were when we were naked hunters fighting off other hominids for genetic supremacy, has clearly outlasted its purpose. What is the point of evolving our larger brains and complex hormonal/emotional responses if we are to continue behaving along a genetic dead-end?

Lion Prince Paul Allen.
8, I see it more like a Seattlite being proud to have never visited the Space Needle, or a New Yorker being proud to have never visited the Statue of Liberty. It's an ironic way of showing your 'regional pride.' "I'm not a tourist! I live here! I don't *do* all those stupid touristy things!"
It's really no big deal.
One (of the many) differences between me & Charles is that buildings & architecture aren't interesting. I could avoid the Space Needle simply because it's just another human edifice, and we have those coming out our ears. Animals, however, are incredibly fascinating, and should I ever move to Africa, I would still visit the Nature Parks to see them in the wild, "touristy" label be damned.

The American Health Care Market.
7, Since you didn't really read the post, I'll repeat it here:
"Compare these same procedures costs in a Dutch, French, Thai, Indian or other world class hospital system."
You still haven't convinced us of the India system (as Fnarf has some points you should respond to), but we'll let you have that one as a "gimme." Now you have to go over the Dutch, French, Thai & all other "world class hospital system", which, although rather general, a list can be adequately put together by looking at overall national health. There would be at least 15-20 other nations on that list.
So, you have your work cut out for you. Please refute how the US system is better than all these other countries. Please exclude personal anecdotes like you did w/ India, tho.

The Monday Morning News.
5, the point is that Syria has *actual* WMD and has *actually* used them. You're probably too young to remember, but the GOP heroes Bush & Cheney created a huge budget deficit by invading Iraq because they imagined it to have WMD. Needless to say, they were complete idiots, every stupid Republican, (and some idiot Dems) and they forced their idiocy upon America via non-stop media barrage of ignoring facts, denouncing those who tried to point out the facts, even aggressively silencing those who simply raised questions about their idiocy. The post is a small tid-bit to point out their idiotic hypocrisy.
The GOP hasn't changed a bit, they are still demanding America follow their idiocy, which includes one John McCain. But everything you believe in is based on fantasy. Let's review-- Austerity doesn't work. Increasing taxes & spending is healthy for the economy. Comprehensive sex education reduces teen pregnancy & abortion. A single-payer health care system not only improves the economy, it creates a happier country. Our military eats up far too much of our budget, and could easily be reduced w/o increasing the threats to our national security.

Walter Cronkite and the Future of the Kitchen in 1967.
yes, yes, all must do as Charles imagines they must do. but forcing people to live 'as one' is no different than forcing them to live separately-- you'll still end up w/ a populace that assumes force is the surest & best way of getting things done. which is pretty much all of history. we know how well that works.
